  • Have to stop doing Atkins

Hey all.... I found out a few hours ago that I'm unfortunately going to have to stop doing the Atkins diet. Last week I went to the doctor and had my bloodwork/physical done and today my dr. said that I'm in the early stages of osteoporosis. Even tho I'm only 31, I was already at risk as it runs in my family. He said my bone density test showed that I have a very low bone density which puts me at a greater risk for fracture. He also said that as of right now I have the bones of a woman in her 60s. Anyway, he's put me on a high calcium supplement and instructed me to begin drinking lowfat milk, eating yogurt, and calcium enriched foods....which are not on the Atkins menu. I'm still going to try to stay lower carb (no bread, refined sugar, flour, etc) but as for strict Atkins, it's just not in my best interests physically now. I had a great time talking to you all and wish you ALL, the very best in life. Stay strong and focused on your goals and know that I'm cheering for your success!

Re: Have to stop doing Atkins

Im sorry to hear about the osteoperosis, my mother was just diagnosed and my grandmothers had it also. I take calcium supps and when the time comes I will definately be adding lc yogurt back into my diet.

I am not well versed in this but you may be able to do low carb or Atkins maintenance and be able to get what you need from your diet. Maybe there is something in another forum on this that someone else has gone thru. Have you done a search to see?

I wish you well and hope you can find what works for you and what your body needs. <hug>

I am so sorry about the osteoporus, That news sucks if you don't mind me saying so. What about low carb milk, calcuim supplements, yogurt. I have been eating yogurt cause I am taking antibiotics and while I am not losing weight, I am not gaining either.
I bet you could taylor your Atkins to fit in with a high calcuim diet. Spinach has tons of calcuim as does a lot of the green leafy veggies.
Maybe a little research is in order and lets hope that 2big sees this post, as she is always one to make good sense out of what doctors tell us.

You can probably get away with a "modified" Atkins.
You won't lose as fast if you keep the carbs up...but there are other ways to lose/maintain weight besides Atkins.
I also heard lately that some extra sun exposure can help bones (you'll have to google that one)
This is one you'll have to research some more.
There are also questions about how much calcium/vit D, what the best sources are etc.

Exercise can help bones too, but it needs to be the right kind. Swimming is probably the best but even some moderate impact aerobics like step can help.
Your best bet is to find a bbs like this one for osteoporosis and see what people on those boards say works.

Re: Have to stop doing Atkins

Thanks for the support and advice everyone. My doctor gave me a ton of literature and info on this disease and what I can do to slow down the bone degeneration. Apparently, walking on a treadmill is actually the best form of exercise for those with osteoporosis because of the gentle impact on the body (also the safest because of lower risk of breaking bones.) I told him how I want to continue losing weight and he gave me a referral for a nutritionist who will create a diet for me that takes into account my weight loss desires along with the foods that I will require to combat the osteoporosis. For once in my life I'm actually going to follow my doctor's orders to the letter because I cannot afford broken bones. With my hubby gone so much of the time, there is no way that I can take care of our daughters if I'm laid up with a bunch of broken bones. So, whatever doctor says, is what I'm going to do.

You'd be surprised with the amount of weight you can lose just by cutting out bread, sugar and processed foods. And, I lost most of my weight in the OWL stage - which allows for dairy products. Best of luck, ssgswife.

Re: Have to stop doing Atkins

well you don't have to leave Atkins at all. Move to OWL and you can have yogurt as part of your Atkins. many of the veggies rich in calcium are on the induction list. did you check the calcium amounts in cheese and cream. There is a limit in the amount of calcium your body can handle too. Are you taking magnesium to assist you with the absorbtion?

yep the walking weight bearing exercise causes the bones to add calcium and get stronger. Swimmers actrually have weaker bones then all other athletes because of the amount of time the spend in nonweight bearing states in the pool.

has your doc checked your parathyroid to see if it was pulling calcium out of your bones?
