  • I'm curious about your cheats

I just realized that most of the time when y'all post about cheats, you have only cheated BRIEFLY. One or two things, then you stop and control yourselves for the rest of the day or evening. And the next day, no matter what the scale says, you start right back into induction.

    Which is amazing, really.

Read the Extended Induction thread or the 14 day and you will see people binging for an entire day or two, or a week, then coming back. That's what I did the other times I tried to get back on this woe.....

What is the difference for you guys? Were you always this disciplined? Or have you developed some new control?

Post your answers, as I am SURE that this can be a lesson for everyone on this entire board........
    Started Atkins 2d time 6/20/05
    218/187/140
    Measuring every 2 weeks
As of 10/31/05, losta total of 56.75 inches!

Cheat consist of giving in to head hunger, sight hunger, and just boredom....right now I can go either way with emotional eating, but instead I'm drinking my water and suffering through this because it's not about me...lol..

Disciplined? lol...no. I have fallen, jumped, and skydived into the madness of going "off the wagon".

The new control?...easy...my fat clothes don't fit anymore and I'm tired of being fat and having been looked at as so. Along with having parents that have recently, in the last 10 months, had health related problems from their adult eating habits.

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

Interesting thread Finelly. I am usually pretty strong and can resist most temptations. Except at TOM time, if I am ever going to slip off, its then. The thing is, I seem to be able to control it most months, but am I really? I either have one cheat meal once a month or I tell myself I didn't cheat at TOM time, but yet I had too much cream cheese and pumpkin pudding, resulting in the same weight gain as if I had had that one cheat meal. Now I am NOT advocating having a cheat meal once a month. I know it works for some, and it works for my mom who is on maintenance, she can do it once a week if she wanted to with no changes. But for me, it seems to consume my thoughts too much and I lose my direction. So...I am not planning on cheating, I don't want to cheat, but I also don't want to feel deprived. If I fall off, I do it quickly, in one meal, ONCE and then get my s**t back together immediatly before I lose focus. I know the purists will rip me apart for saying this...but I know what works for me and what doesn't. I am doing this, the weight is coming off and the inches lost is incredible to me. Thats what I need to concentrate on. When my scale doesn't move for a few days, or inches aren't coming off in 2 to 3 days, I know theres a problem somewhere, and I find it, and eliminate it. I don't expect myself to be perfect...only as good as I can be comfortably. The weight is coming off...Good for me! Good for you Finelly! Good for us all! Sorry for babbling.

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

I agree with Finelly- when I cheat it usually turns into almost a week of carb binges. For that reason I have stayed around the same weight for a month now because, I cheat like that for a week and it takes the next three weeks to lose that weight. I've noticed my cheats have started around TOM so I am going to learn how to cook some of those legal treats. Please pass over some of your self restraint!

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

The first time around, I would have a "free" meal once a month (long after induction, probably after being on extended induction and Atkins for 3 months).Don't shoot me, this may not work for others, but worked for me last time. I would have a "free" meal and I swear, drop 2 pounds after that. It was always a stall breaker for me. Again, this may not work for some and is definitely not part of DANDR.

This time around, I'm having a harder time staying true to this woe. So, I don't do the cheat meals. When I screw up and have that "one" cheat, I get back on track immediately because I don't want to be like this anymore. I want to wear clothes that fit and feel good. I try not to beat myself up over it, because that is still letting food control.

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

Yes I too have experienced the 2 pound drop after eating a cheat meal, and I also saw the lbs go up for 3 days until it finally went back to what it was prior. Sucks. I know what you mean, you get to likin' the loose clothes, and you don't want to lose sight of that. The cheats get smaller and fewer and farther in between I notice.

Thats what STAC is all about peeps...gaining control, slowly but surely. I found that if you fall off, staying away from your support forum because you are embarrased to admit it is the ultimate WORST thing you can do. We need to have our daily support. Whether you confess or not, just come on back right away. Staying away means many more cheat days, and a total loss of control. Better to be where you can be helped and encouraged.

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

I think it was God for me. I have been wrestling with going back to thes way of eating for about a year now. So when I got off my a** and did it, it has not been an issue. I have not cheated other than to have a low carb alcoholic drink!!! But I didn't cheat any other way, and I like the way my pants feel and I look the energy and getting up in the morning with no issues.

I have decided that I will have one "cheat" meal a month, but it usually falls around special occasions. But if I see this being an issue, then I will cut back!!

Re: I'm curious about your cheats

I think the difference is that a lot of the people in the forums you mentioned are brand new to this. Most of us have done this for extended periods of time before, and know that it works. We've made it through induction at least once, we know what to expect, etc...

So it becomes easier to avoid falling completely off the wagon because you know that if you just hop back on you'll avoid the flu again. And you know that gaining a pound here or there won't be the end of the world, because things take patience. You also know what kinds of foods help you whoosh and what types of things are satisfying as a snack, etc...

Least, that's how it is for me.

Plus, I just want to fit into my clothes again. I'm tired of giving into my every whim which I was doing for a while. I like having that control over things. Control is a key issue I think - I seem to do better on everything when I'm in control over my eating!
