  • Curious, exercise.....

For those of you who exercise and calculate it by saying "I ran a Mile." How do you figure this? Do you have a pedometer, or have you used some other method to verify its a mile? I walk 30 minutes each night and I'm wondering what that would be mile wise. Next step is to drive my car around the neighborhood to calculate. LOL

I usually run at the high scool track and four times around is a mile. I also have a treadmil at home which tells you. But, I also have done the car trick and got a rough measurement that way.

If you walk at about 3.3 miles per hour (briskly but not too much) then you'd be doing about 1 1/2 miles per day.

I use the car method. I redrive the same area a few times to verify. (in diff cars too, I have to really prove to myself that I ran that far. LOL)

I would definitely take the car if you are exercising by distance. I started a walk/run program a few weeks ago and the book that I am reading is strongly encouraging time instead of distance. So, I am trying that for awhile. I walk/run for thirty minutes, four times a week. After I am running the entire time of thirty minutes, the book suggests that I then work on increasing my distance. The book is by Amby Bigfood called Beginning Running from Runner's World. Anyway, just a suggestion. I am such a beginner to all this...

what the rungs mean to me:
            rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
            rung 4 - berries, melon
            rung 5 - wine -
            rung 6 - beans, hummus
            rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)

I remember that I used to do 30 min on a treadmill and that normally between 1.4 and 1.6 miles...and i was walking with a small brisk pace....So I would definetly say you walked at least a mile....

I use a pedometer when I walk/jog. It also counts steps which is kind of interesting. Debra

So 1 hours semi brisk walking is about 3 miles?

                    Re: Curious, exercise.....

I'd say so. Although it depends on what your definition of 'brisk' is. 3 miles an hour makes 20 minute miles, and i've walked up to 4.5 miles an hour on the treadmill. So, if you're REALLY going for it (practically jogging) it could be more.
