  • TOM tips for getting through it

    I weighed myself this morning knowing I didn't cheat at all this weekend, only to be up 2 lbs and normally my weight stays very steady. I know I am coming up on my TOM so this is probably due to that and is only water retention. BTW, I do weigh myself every day so I know this happened over a course of one day's time.

    What I was wondering is what do all you women do to get yourself through this phase. Drink more water? Quit weighing until after the TOM is over?

    It is kind of depressing. I think I just need some words of encouragement and I know this is the place to come. ~~PJ

    To deal with possible cravings, I:

    1. Increase my fat intake slightly right before TOM is due.
    2. Make sure I have a sweet treat available each day.
    3. Reduce my consumption of meat (it seems to do weird things to me.....including stall weight, but also sometimes increase cravings)

    To deal with the weight issue, I:

    1. Pay no attention to the scale. It is really meaningless around this time (and pretty much always)
    2. Try to drink more water (but frankly, did not succeed this time around)
    3. Make sure that I get in my 45 min of cardio each day, as this tends to keep me from getting bloated.

    To deal with the emotional ups and downs, I:

    1. Try to get a little more sleep than usual.
    2. Recognize that the day before and the day of, I tend to overreact to things.
    3. Tell myself that any upswing in anxiety or frustration is hormonal.

    Hope this helps! For what it's worth, I always lose some bit of weight as TOM progresses.........

        I'm a full moon kind of gal...every full moon I get to be my cracky self

        Fin's got some really great advise there! Only thing more I can add is make sure you just stay focused and true to you. From one scale hog to another, put the scale away for a week, atleast until AFTER your TOM

          OK, I admit, I am a scale hog but I only weigh once a day in the morning. I vow to put the scale away until after my TOM is over and then I will report back. This will be very hard for this scale junkie. PJ

            Oh Pj...girl I know the feeling

            I made that mistake and got a horrible suprise....I guess as woman we forget our body goes through some many changes...and im sure eating better will cause your body to react in ways that it would not have normally before atkins...

            So my advice is never weigh yourself 3 days before TOM and wait at least 5 day after TOM and you will more than likely get more of an accurate weigh-in...Also continue to drink your water, increase a little more if you can I find that it doesn't make me as bloated...Its more like cleasing your system out....sorta ....

              After going cold turkey the first four or five weeks of this woe, I succumbed and became a scale junkie. I weigh several times a day, just out of curiosity.

              The trick, however, is that I only count the lowest weight in the week. The rest is just water and whatever I've been eating.

                Whoa... me too!!! And what really bites this week........... Im a little late this month and all the signs are of impending TOM AND the full moon is in a few days.

                I realized that when posting a few things on the calendar this afternoon and now realize why I could rip someones head off and why the whoopie pies at the store are dancing in my head, dreams,in every thought all day long.
