  • Metebolically resistant, supplements, and ketosis

Okay, so this is my theory: I am one of the lucky ones to be considered Metabolically resistant, even if only slightly.

I have been doing well. Staying below 20-25 carbs daily, exercising, taking vitamins and supplements daily (l carnitine, chromium, l glutamine, green tea supplement, multivitamin). Water drinking is only so-so, but I will do better!!!!! 11 lbs down, although today it shows I have gained back 3, but I feel like it is water weight. My rings are a bit snug on my fingers this morning. TOM is almost ready to come visit I fear.

I have been in ketosis all along.

Well, ran out of l carnitiine this week, and then I slacked off on the other ones a bit. DOn't know why, it just happened.

I have not slacked of on my foods, but I did not exercise my weekend day. Will jump back on that today.

So, this morning I checked the strip, and NO ketosis.

Opinions as to my metabollic resistant state???

So, I just downed chromium, l carn. l gut., green tea supp, and vitamin.

If your eating has been fine and carbs under 25 then you are probably still in ketosis..... is it possible that you have old strips (they do go bad... I had it happen twice). Also if you drink a lot of water it will dilute the results on the strip and wont show anything. I never show a reading unless I am slacking in my water, so dont use them.

Re: Metebolically resistant, supplements, and ketosis

I have never used a keto strip in my life, so I can't speak to that. But if you have been losing weight and staying under 20-25 carbs, you are in ketosis!

But I do know that one should not jump to the conclusion that one is metabolically resistent. Read the sticky up above about the slow scales the second time around. A lot of us are finding that the weight on the scale is just not really coming off very quickly. 11 lbs is nothing to sneeze at!

I'm betting that TOM is on his way. That accounts for the bloating and the 3 lbs.

Psigna, speaking from experience I can tell you that after I've been on this woe for a while I will not lose weight taking in say 20 carbs per day. Although I don't think you need to change anything yet, it is possible that you will have to cut down to the 10-15 grams per day and see if that helps. I know it sucks because I've done it too. Just keep an eye on things right now as you've been doing.

Bill, that is so interesting! Was it like that the first time around, too?

My first time around I pretty much did the same thing after I had lost about 13 lbs, and that was one of trhe reasons that I got discouraged and quit. I am trying to do better this time.

Re: Metebolically resistant, supplements, and ketosis

Finelly, it happened just like I was saying. I was doing maybe 20 grams per day (back in 1993 when I went to the Atkins Center in NYC). I lost a lot of weight doing this, but I hit a wall eventually and both Dr. Atkins and the main doctor there I was using advised to cut out some hidden carbs in sugar free gum and the like. This knocked my carb count down to 10-15 per day, and I started losing again. I probably could have waited it out longer, but I demanded results of myself. Sometimes we have to make the hard choice. It ain't easy, believe me. At some point a lot of us have to consider cutting the carbs further than we originally thought.

                And then there's me.

I reach a point where increasing my carb intake makes the weight move more reliably.

Re: Metebolically resistant, supplements, and ketosis

My brother in law does this somewhat. Every couple of weeks he will eat a higher carb meal. Not overboard, but higher than normal. He does south beach type low carb.

I am too afraid to try that!!!!

On a side note, maybe coincidence, maybe not, but I am in ketosis again this afternoon. I did not drink alot of water this past weekend, so I don't think the strips were diluted.

Who knows?!?!? Anyway, I won't be skipping my supplements anytime soon.

Re: Metebolically resistant, supplements, and ketosis

one thing you need to remember about stix all they show is the excess concentration of unburned for fuel ketones you had in your blood stream at the time that urine was created. That is not Dr Atkins definition of ketosis. Burning fats for fuel was his definition so if youa re eating your Atkins correctly you will always be in ketosis.

There is a stickie in the FAQ about this. if you are burning your ketones and your fats eficiently you could never turn a stix and be a very successful Atkins loser.
