• Feeling down & out

You know, sometimes you just have one of those days when you are feeling down and out. I jumped on the scale this morning weighing in at 157, this is 3 days after my TOM. I had gained 3 lbs during my TOM and only dropped 1.8 of those 3 lbs. I have been back faithfully on this WOE for the last 4 wks and only lost 4 lbs as of today, since I went back up 1.2 lbs. I guess I will need to change my sliding scale in my signature soon back up the scale.

I am drinking my water. I started measuring this Tues. I started exercising this Tues. and exercised on Wed. Yesterday, I did not exercise because I stayed busy doing laundry and went out and washed/chammied the car and that took over an hour. I plan to exercise tonight though.

I can only hope the inches come off but my clothes don't seem to fit any differently. Nope, I am not giving up this WOE. I am hanging in there but it is hard not seeing results. I guess the good things are that I do feel better and I have you guys for support!

I did take a before pic and plan on taking one this weekend to see if I can compare them, just maybe there is a difference (I am hoping). Sorry, this is so long but I just needed someone to tell.

aww sweetie, do something for yourself today...only you. I once had a psychologist tell me if I had a negative thought to combat it with 5 postive ones. try going for a walk this morning, maybe that will help you. as far as the weight....it takes a few days for the excess water to come off...you will be there...just hang in

    hugs and love your way

, and more . I know how you feel. Please don't let this get ya down. I did the same thing you did and it depressed the heck out of me. I had my husband hide the scale. I am only going to weigh in about every 4-6 weeks. I would love to move my little ticker, but it will have to wait untill the middle of Sept. Just go by your measurements only and how your clothes are fitting. Hang in there and keep strong. Scales don't measure true wt. loss anyway. PM me if you want. I will keep you encouraged.

Thanks Dee & Michele, I really needed some words of encouragement today. I will take you up on that offer Michele if I really get bummed out. Tomorrow, I am taking my mom shopping so maybe I will try and buy myself something to cheer me up. What would really cheer me up is getting that new hard drive in the mail for my laptop so that I can fix it to use for posting on this forum at night. I still have my desktop but I hate using that old thing. Of course, I still have this work computer too.

What really amazes me, is how some of you have gone for 5 or 6 wks. with no weight loss. I am assuming there have been inches lost during this time, otherwise, what would keep you motivated???

          Re: Feeling down & out

Ok, let's talk about the scale. And ketosis. And calories. And water, both the kind you drink and the kind you retain. And TOM.

The scale measures how much your body weighs when you are standing on it. If you are wearing clothes, it includes the weight of your clothes. If you are wearing the 3 lb diamond ring your dh gave you yesterday, then it includes the weight of that. If your hair is wet, it includes that. Your weight is things like muscle, fat, water, flesh. If you are retaining more water than you did yesterday, then the scale will register more weight than yesterday.

(I know, I know, you know this already)

If you are following the woe, and eating less than 20 grams of carbs, then you are in ketosis. If you are in ketosis and you are not going over 200 above your calorie limit, you are losing fat. (duh, Finelly, why are you lecturing?)

When the fat is squeezed out of the fat cells during ketosis, your body, being the kind of body that likes to stay alive and maintain the equilibrium, fills up those cells with water. That water sticks around for awhile, because it's home there. Eventually, though, it realizes that it actually belongs in the toilet, and it releases itself from those cells in a whooshie. (yes, yes, I read the damned article, Finelly)

The female body is a miracle. We have this intricate system for reproduction that is managed by an even more intricate system of hormones. We get to have periods (whoopee!) and those periods come with all sorts of fun stuff, like sore boobs, and cramps, and water retention. Now, these hormones do not function on an on-off switch. They are in a cycle and that cycle goes on for 28 days or so (oh, joy). They build up, they release. Not in one day, but over the course of many days. So you will build up fluid retention for several days before Tom, and you will keep it there for awhile, and GRADUALLY let it go. Because that is the fun part about having periods. Not in 2 days, not in 4 days, sometimes in 8 days. Or, oh joy oh rapture, 12 days.

(thank you for the biology lesson, Finelly)

What your body does NOT do, unless you are dehydrated (and even then, it doesn't happen for more than 24 hours, because then you start RETAINING water like Finelly is - and she is up 2 lbs, too) is release TOO MUCH water so that you weigh less than you really weigh. In other words, whatever your lowest weight is, that's how much you weigh. Unless you have eating 4800 calories in the last 7 days, if the scale goes up from there, it's not because you gained fat.

(what are you TALKING about Finelly? Finelly is telling you that the low weight before TOM is the true weight you are now, dummy)

The ONLY exception to this is if you gained muscle weight. Muscle weight is slow. You might gain a pound or two over 8-10 weeks. And that would require resistence training in addition to cardio. AND it wouldn't suddenly appear in a day or two, but it would gradually appear, ounce by ounce, over the course of that time period. So in your case, this is just not happening.

(Since when did you become an expert on this, Finelly? Since I talked to a sports physician the other day)

There is a reason that the experts tell us not to weigh every day (or four times a day like Finelly does) or every week, even, but to have an official weigh-in day every 2 weeks or, better yet, every month. It's because by golly, you have no idea what the scale really MEANS. It's not measuring your FAT. It's measuring what the body weighs. It's not measuring whether you've LOST anything, just what you are at any given moment.

ANd it's because wonderful, dedicated, superwomen like pjade get very upset when the stupid fluid from TOM doesn't disappear as fast as she thinks it is going to. And this makes her sad, and have a lousy day. And it causes Finally to write a really long, stupid post full of facts that everyone already knows, and bore the **** out of people.

Now, go do something really nurturing for yourself! You deserve it, because you've been really working hard at this, and the fact that the (*)#@$(*&^% scale isn't showing results means NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING!!!!!!!

          Love you, darlin'.

            Re: Feeling down & out

Yes Finelly, I know you are right and yes, I have read all those articles too but I am just going on what my body normally did in the past. Normally, I was back to what I weighed before my TOM by the second or third day after it was finished. This time, for whatever reason, I am not. Maybe it is taking longer for some unknown reason but time will tell and I got lots of that.

It never hurts to reread those words again to remind me of what I already know. I am thankful that you responded. I am hanging in there and will try to do something nice or fun for myself when I get home from work today.

I am NOT giving up! I AM NOT! I AM NOT! I AM NOT!

                Re: Feeling down & out

The reason it is taking longer than usual to release the TOM water weight may be because you actually have lost fat during the last week. So your body is not just dealing with the "when to release the hormonal water" but "should I REALLY let go of the contents of those fat cells? The water seems just fine there......"

Thanks FIN, now this makes more sense to me! I am starting to feel better already! I will keep you posted. I am thinking/hoping this is the case. Looking forward to Tues. for my first measure in, although it has only been a week. You've been a great help!
