  • Wheat allergy?

When I started this WOE, I noticed my rosacea and minor skin blemishes clear up. People constantly remark about how clear my skin looks now. Sure, it's partly due to drinking my water, but I also discovered that it was due to a wheat allergy! Whenever I add back wheat (especially low-carb bread) my skin breaks out and rosacea symptoms return.

Has anyone else discovered food allergies on this WOE?

I found out I can't have mushrooms! Weird, but hey! I don't think my body likes me ingesting molds or large amounts of fermented foods! I also have to keep cheeses to a pragmatic minimum.

Thanks to Atkins we really get to know our bodies!

My skin clears up too and I was wondering if it was the sugar making it flake? I've drank water before (a lot) and it will clear it up to a certain point, but when I do Induction it really looks great.

Last July through September (about two months in that time) me and DH were both doing Induction and I noticed that when I started drinking milk again that it bloated me and I had cramps & diah. So, I don't know if I am lactose intolerent or if it was because I hadn't drank it in so long that all the needed enzymes were gone and had to be replenished...?

Yes!! For 20 years I've suffered with stomach problems. I've been told I had IBS, the beginnngs of an ulcer, a nervous stomach, etc...and yes, still suffered. When I started Atkins a couple of years ago, I noticed that I felt better than I ever had. No stomachaches, no throwing up, etc. Out of all people, my infertility accupuncurist suggested that I might have a gluten allergy. I went to my PCP, insisted he test me, and VIOLA! There is was!!

All the Drs/specialists I went to over the years never even thought that it might be a food allergy! No one ever tested me!! Amazing! Since then I have "tested" myself, and been on and off this WOE, and yes, there is a HUGE difference from when I eat gluten products, and I dont!

          Re: Wheat allergy?

I have been told (and have experienced for myself) that allergies to wheat (gluten) and dairy/dairy solids (whey) go hand in hand, which sucks for someone like me, that lives for the cake & ice cream! This is commonly referred to as "celiac disease, the most common symptom of which is abdominal bloating & discomfort. They are also more prone to yeast infection. If you are one of those people like I was, where people would constantly be asking are you pregnant? and, When are you due?, this might be you. The abdominal bloat thing has been the most irritating thing I've had to deal with my whole life! It only got worse when I was pregnant and kept getting asked, "how many?", because I looked like I swallowed a volkswagen whole...You may even just be bothered and wondering why all your weight is in your belly. The summer I heard about this in a magazine was the summer I stumbled into atkins. The other symptoms I had were skin bumps and outbreaks on my jawline, upper arms, chest & back. As an experiment, I completely deleted these things from my diet, and in two weeks, although I maybe lost three or four pounds, it looked like way more because my stomach completely "deflated"! Like I've said before & been told by my doctor, we really can be most attracted by the foods we're sensitive to, so if you crave these foods, there's another clue. I learned of someone who'd lost a lot of weight on atkins later that summer, did a little research on the web, looked at how I was eating, and thought, "Heck, I'm already almost on this diet" and lost 7 lbs my first week on induction. I've read that more women experience this than men, but you may want to really read those food labels, especially in bars, meat products, etc., for whey and wheat gluten, as both are used as binders in lots of foods. There are cheeses that most people with these symptoms can have, like culture and moldy ones, as in blue cheese. Hope this helps someone- wished I'd learned about it before 40-
