  • Why do you really want to lose weight?

Sometimes, if we really re-think what is important, we can understand our real reasons behind shedding the pounds. Share some of your reasons here that you really feel compelled to lose the weight.

For me, there are several factors:

    1. 9/11. Now, you might be thinking, WTH is she talking about? They didn't fly a fat girl into the World Trade Centers. Well, no they didn't. But you know what really got to me? At 325 pounds could I have helped someone else out of the building? Would I have been someone the firefighters or someone else could help get out of the building? Would I have been strong enough, healthy enough, spry enough during a vast disaster such as that at 325? No. I decided then and there I would have to do something about my weight. If I don't have health on my side, I endanger those around me during a disaster, be it natural or otherwise. And I must be strong for my family and myself!

    2. Vanity. Face it. Putting houndstooth over my frame at 325 would make me look like I done ate the hound. If you haven't seen my really BAD before pictures before, I'll post them sometime. They are truly a horror to behold. I miss shopping at thrift stores and buying the cute retro clothes! I miss shopping for shoes and not having feet so fat that I had to look for the Fred Flintstone model. I miss being able to wear lipstick and not look like the fat witch in the Little Mermaid. I want to be pretty, ding dang it!

    3. Health. I really miss running 3 miles a day! I miss jumping. Yes. Jumping! At 325, there was no way I could jump. Even now, if I jump, I blind myself with a flailing arm flap. That's no fun. I might even knock someone out with an airborn breast. It's not a pretty sight! I want to be limber, be able to jump around. I want to do a somersault again!

    4. I want to teach my kids good habits and to be adults who don't respond to crisis or emotion with food. Our kids are made up of half OUR DNA. If we have issues with food and blood sugars, more than likely so do they. If we're predisposed to being fat--guess what! So are they. Since I've begun Atkins, the junk foods have been filtering out of my house very slowly. Now the kids begs me to make devilled eggs as an afternoon snack, when once we all sat around foisting chips into our mouths. My kids have been trimming down. We go out and play croquet or basketball! We even moved near a park and walking trail for access to more exercise! We've never been happier since we've changed! But, as the mom, it was really up to me. And looking at how I used to manage this family with regards to food and lack of exercise breaks my heart. Never again! My kids are learning to talk when frustrated, to sleep when tired, or to come and read with me or we'll spend time together when they're bored. And we no longer center birthdays and holidays around food. And you know what? They don't care! Because we're all together. So who's teaching them that food is so important in our lives? I was. No more.

    Hi Cleo

Never thought of point number one but with all the latest escapades in London - you have a point.

Totally agree with points 2, 3 and 4 and need to add

    5. I want another baby (I know, I may be mad being broody already!!) but I don't want to be overweight at the start of my pregnancy.

I'm determined to do it this time and to keep it off xxx

Exactly I agree on all points. I want to be able to help rather than have 4 men have to carry me out in an emergency. I want my daughter to be healthy and active and NOT overweight and only I can teach her how to do that at this early age. One of my goals is to be small enough by the time she is tall enough so we can both fit on the rides at six flags.

all of the above. (well, not the kids part ,but change the kids to my Dog) 9-11 impacted me greatly, and Ihave often wondered if I could navigate all those stairs.

I also want to open up my ability to be cast in different roles in the theatre. Being "average" sized would change my theatrical life greatly. I WILL GET THERE!

I got tired of giving up things I enjoyed doing all my life (racquetball, hiking etc.) I guess as you start getting older activities you used to take for granted now become something you need to focus on in order to keep doing them. Without being fit you can kiss them goodbye. I am not willing to kiss them off at this point.

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

The biggest thing that got me started this spring was:

            1. I didn't want to walk my toddler into the water at the beach and be constantly worried about how I looked in a bathing suit. I wasn't going to take him to the beach at all. That got me so upset that I started Atkins the next day.

            2. Exercise. I want to be able to run around the block and not feel like I'm dying. I was able to do that until I broke the darn ankle. Oh well, it's healing well, and I will be able to do it again.

            3. Lastly, I want to go to the regular section of the store and buy something so darn cute and feel awesome in it.

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

              1. Diabetes
The biggest reason is definitely that I don't want full blown diabetes. I am already glucose intolerant, and when I got my diagnosis, my doctor said that if I didn't clean up my act, I'd be diabetic in 5 years.

Diabetes also runs on both sides of my family, through many generations. To say that there's "family history" of diabetes around these parts is the understatement of the year.

I don't want to live that way, and I sure as **** do NOT want to die that way.

              2. Vanity
I think everyone could say this one. I want to be able to walk into any store I want, pick up the cutest thing off the shelf, and know that regardless of what it is, it will fit me. I never again want to get home empty handed, humiliated and in tears because after shopping for 3 hours for a dress to wear to a wedding, I still found nothing that fit/looked ok.

              3. My Knees
I am a 26 year old with a 60 year old's knees. That sounds like an exageration, I know, but those are the words from my doctor's mouth. I played soccer for over half my life, and then one day my knees ballooned up to the size of baseballs, and ended my soccer career.

I have osteoarthritis in both of my knees, and they cause me pain every day of my life. I finally bit the bullet and saw an orthopedic surgeon, the first person able to actually explain to me what's happening with these bones of mine. The muscles on the outside of my thighs are pulling my patellas outwards, so they don't sit flush and rotate in the femural groove properly, but instead sit on an angle. Both knees, same thing.

I told him how I'd lost 25lbs, and felt a difference in the degree of pain I was now feeling each day. He exclaimed, "of course!" He said that the moment you bend your knees, even at a 20 degree angle, you're putting 100 times your weight in force on your knees. So if I'd lost 25 lbs, I'd removed 250 lbs worth of weight on my knees. Talk about motivation to lose these last 25 lbs. I can't imagine what it'll be like to remove 500 lbs worth of force on my knees.

I told him I wanted to wait on the surgery where he'd cut the muscle away from my bone in an attempt to allow my patellas to fall back into place. (There's only a 75% chance it'll help, unfortunately. Apparently those who only felt a 50% improvement still said it was worth it because 50% was better than nothing. On the plus side, he said if it doesn't help at all, I haven't lost anything - it doesn't cause damage or more pain). I told him I wanted to lose these last 25lbs and see how much easier it made living life with these knees. I know eventually this surgery will become a reality I can't avoid (which I've already been doing for almost 8 years), but if I can put it off years by losing weight, you bet I will.

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

Hi everyone! This is my first post (finally- lurker here!) and I just felt compelled to share my reasons.

I want to feel good about myself - My husband just got deployed (heading to Kuwait) and this is something I can do for me. I lost about 50 lbs on Atkins before but like a dummy, I gained it back. I realize where I went wrong and I realize what is important to me. I always spent so much time on everyone else...now I will have a chance to do something for ME.

I want my husband to be floored when he sees me next. I want to be proud of myself and I want my family to be proud of me.

We also want to have another baby. I know being overweight hurts my chances of getting pregnant. I want a healthy body to carry my child.

This is a great board and I look forward to posting!

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

My most obvious and immediate desire to lose weight is I am getting married in Dec and don’t want to look like a fat pig in my silver wedding dress. Not to mention I have already bought it and it is too small (on purpose), but it is not way too small (I have realistic expectations). I will not be at my goal weight by then – hopefully by next summer – but I want more than just to shed a few pounds for a wedding – I WANT TO KEEP THIS WEIGHT OFF FOR LIFE!!!

I am tired of being tired. Tired of my muscles complaining. Tired of not being able to breathe when I bend over. Tired of shopping at Lane Bryant and other “fat” stores. I want to enjoy going shopping for clothes – not dread it. I don’t want to be a size 8 again – I would be happy with a size 12. I want to enjoy sewing myself a costume next year for the Renaissance Festival. I do not want to end up like my Mother at the end of her life, gasping for every breath. Yes, she smoked and this damaged her lungs, but she did not have lung cancer. Her weight killed her first. She couldn’t breathe because of the water-retention and fat around her lungs and chest. She couldn’t walk more than a few steps the last 2 years of her life and I missed not being able to go shopping with her and do things with her. I want to stay healthy for my kids so I can stick around and aggravate the heck out of them!

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

I want to lose weight so I can feel more confident. I haven't actually had a relationship... in a very long while, anything that matters anyway. Mainly due to my lack of confidence due to the way I look (or the way I perceive myself). I can't feel good about myself unless I can look good (to me.)

So it's a combo of vanity and confidence for me.

Re: Why do you really want to lose weight?

I seem to have the same problem as Rybread with my knees, the Dr called it dislocated patellae. The right one is a lot worse after a car accident, it slides outward instead of up and down. I noticed after gaining an extra 27 lbs that it's much worse, swells every night, and my BACK is killing me. Surgery has been recommended for both problems. I've only just re-started full-time work after almost 5 years, and it's been thanks to my initial weight loss that helped me recover from the back injury enough to go back to work.

Second reason is also blood sugar. I know I am hypo-glycemic, and my family has typeII diabetes in it, so I know I'm at risk if I don't take control. My original thought after reading DANDR was, "Well, it probably won't help me lose weight since nothing else did, but it should help with the sugar problem." It did from Day 1.

Third reason: After not wearing my wedding band set for 11 years, I was able to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary with it ON just 6 months after beginning this WOE!! The "breaking point" is 150 lbs, and I am now 156. I did NOT remove the rings as I passed 150, so I can't get them off!!! I WILL NOT get them cut off!! I was pregnant 13 years ago when I took them off before, so I knew I was getting bigger for a reason. No good reason this time!!!

Fourth reason: I am certainly not comfortable with my legs scraping together when I walk. I liked being able to cross my legs comfortably while sitting. I don't like having a big tummy in my lap when sitting.

Fifth reason: Clothes! I looked so CUTE in little size 6 clothes! I'm such a blob, even though I remember being elated to fit into size 12 after a size 1x. I didn't buy any summer clothes in size 12, though, since I started in the spring, and it was heart-rending to have to buy summer "fat" clothes. I need to fit into my cute stuff for winter.

Whew!! Now to print this and remind myself when it gets tough..... it's only been a half day so far.

I found myself nodding at so many of your reasons, and wanting to reach out and hug some of you, too. I really appreciate reading these reasons. I think so many of us relate to each other in so many ways. It's at times like these I realize how very similar every one of us is.
