  • Reached my Half Marathon Goal

I am stoked I reached my half marathon goal my treadmill milage was waaaaay off it's an old treadmill. SO any how here I thought I was running sooo darn slow like a snail on the treadmill. It's a totally different storey I have been running at a pretty great pace. I finished my first Half in 2:24:40 WOOOHOOO for me I know I am crazy. By the treadmill I only ran 11 miles.

To test my theory of the treadmill being wrong I bought a pedometer and calibrated it to within 0.01 off for a KM. I hasuspicions for a while it was off cause I could run my rout outside for 4 miles in a littel less then 45 minutes but, when I was on the treadmill it would take me 57 minutes not just a littel off a lot off.

For Kicks, yes I know I am nuts, I decided to do the 11 miles increasing like I have been for a while on the treadmill not knowing any better well not only did I run the half I ran 1 mile further for a total of 14.1 miles or 22.6 KMs WOOOHOOO for me I am sooo Happy I just wanted to share with everyone. Not bad for a girl who is still 202 POUNDS is it. I never let my weight get in the way of my goal it doesn't matter how big you are if you put your mind to something you can do it. Oh, might I also add I have nevr had an injury from my exercise either cause I belive I am training the right way according to my body.

I have Athma as well and used to have the same problem when running I always take my puffer 15 minutes before I run I also take singulair and have a perscription for Ephedrine for if need which I only need on my long runs.

So it will get better as your cariovascular system improves.

              WOW! That is so fantastic!

I must admit that I have toyed with the idea of getting back into running. What stops me is a fear of injury or that I will eventually have to stop due to an injury and then will gain back some weight......I do 45 min of cardio a day on the elliptical and bikes and treadmill, but no running.

Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me how you started. Talk to me, girl!

Re: Reached my Half Marathon Goal

Oh goodness I WOULD LOVE TO. It has basically taken me 9 months to get here it has been VERY slow and steady progress but, I knew I would make it. Basically I started with lifting weights I have been told numerous times that having balanced muscles is the key to running properly and injury free so I started out doing that 3 days a week. At that time I was only walking as I was 285 pounds. When I got my weight down to 255 and didn't feel the pain in my knees any more I began to incorperate running. I spent a lot of time going to the sights and reading. Well, I have to tell you the truth I started out too fast and too hard I wanted to be there now that was stupid and I was lucky I didn't injure myself. My first run at 255 I ran 7 minutes and I thought I was gunna die. Then I came accross a running thread on another board that's where I met ttdriver who helped me in finding this great sight. www.coolrunnings.com. I started out just following the journey of running my first 5 k. It was very hard to begin with, the cardio system was very weak and I would have asthma attacks frequently and also got sick a lot. I kept going though in time over a few months I was up to running 45 minutes straight. I was at this time around 235 pounds. I kept going, adding milage very slowly no more then 10% per week. I at this time only went by how my body felt and went for time not distance.

Over the next months as I really began to improve I ran my fiorst 10K in 80 minutes it was at that point I realized that if I could do 10 K I could do anything. Once I reached the 10 K distance it has actually been a lot easier adding milage then it was before my body gets stressed but not to the pont is was when I first started.

Always remeber to start slow if you are having pain in your knees you may want to consider doing strenthening exercises for that area. If you are worried about injury more the reason to take it slow. I am not sure where you are in running but, the only way to guage that is to go out and do it. If you can only run 1 minute at a snails pace then that's where you start when I started running it was more like walking with a bounce. Now I can actually say I am a runner.

If you wanna talk any more please pm me or better yet come and join us all on the cool running thread in the exercise forum there are lost just starting the couch-5K program which is awesome might I add and we always love having new people.

Thats fantastic! What i don't get is how you go such a distance? I mean, I run 1/2 a block and I am so winded that I have to stop and try to catch my breath. Some runner I'm gonna be! hahahahahaha

So I should start with a block and try that each day for awhile to see if it gets easier?

Most definately start slow Do the block if you can if not that's ok guage on where you got to on the block and each week go just a little further past the mark you went last time. Soon you'll be running 1 block then 1.5 blocks then 2 and well on your way. GOOD for you!!!
