  • Jewish holidays question

I'm hoping Finelly, and anyone else with any experience with this, can help me here. My dh's family is Jewish and every year we go for Rosh Hashana and Passover with them. This will be my first time doing Atkins over the holidays and I don't want to blow it.

However, my MIL's gefilte fish is to die for. I don't suppose that's allowed, is it?

Her soup is also the best. She puts everything in separately as she's serving it up, so would it be okay to have the broth with some chicken pieces in it? She cooks it with parsnip and carrots, but they don't come with the soup unless you ask.

I can navigate the rest of the meal and avoid dessert, but the fish and soup are the best part of the meal, IMO, so I wanna know now if I have to totally avoid them so I can get my mind set ahead of time. I'm currently on induction and I think I'll stay on extended induction the first week of October and then move to OWL.

Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Ok, here's the deal on gefilte fish.

First, it has to be the UNSWEETENED kind. (there are two kinds. Sweet and not sweet. You want the not sweet)

Second, gefilte fish has small amounts of matzo meal in it as a binder. Matzo meal is made with white flour. So, strictly speaking, it's a no-no.

    HOWEVER............

I know about 24 people who are orthodox who have done Atkins. I checked with them when I was starting, because although I am "reformodox", we keep kosher, too. Every single one of them told me that they ate gefilte fish upon occasion, not regularly, but every now and again on a holiday. A piece has 2 carbs, which isn't bad, and if you are pretty sure that the white flour won't cause you to suddenly eat an entire loaf of challah, you could do it.

When I first did Atkins, it was in February and Passover happened a couple of months later. Jewish law required me to eat a small morsel of matzo at each seder (2 of them) so I did, and nothing happened. I also ate a piece of gefilte fish at each seder. Nothing happened.

The amount of matzo meal in a piece of gefilte fish is equivalent to a small corner of a piece of matzo. Even Dr. Atkins said that eating matzo or communion wafers was acceptable since it was such small amounts.

So, long story short: Eat the gefilte fish (unsweetened). Eat the chicken soup. Avoid the matzo balls. Stay on the other side of the table from the raising challah (which is my hardest thing to avoid, but I've done it before, and I'll do it again!) . Stay away from the glazed carrots. Eat the brisket. Have some chopped liver.

    And happy new year!

      Re: Jewish holidays question

I eat gefilte fish occasionally and it has never affected me; some people that make gefilte fish from scratch use non-sugar (Splenda etc) sweetners if they are diabetics, Atkins etc. The soup is probably fine...i always make chicken soup w/ carrots, once in a while w/ parsnips...no problem as long as i don't eat those vegetables; eat the onions and soup chicken pieces if you want something in the broth.

Beware of 'hidden carbs' in honey laced foods. In the tradition of hoping for a sweet year it's customary to eat foods sweetened w/honey...honey mustard chicken, honey roasted meat and as Finelly said honey glazed carrots.

      Happy sweet,locarb new year!

        Re: Jewish holidays question

Thanks very much! Since I only get to have gefilte fish twice a year I was really disappointed at the thought of not having any. I agree, Finelly, the challah is the hardest part. One of my s-i-l's makes her own and she puts raisins in it and it's to die for (or to die from, in our case - lol). So I'll have a tiny piece of fish, a bowl of soup with just chicken and avoid all sugary stuff. Bring on the brisket!

Early happy new year to you to!
