  • Do you buy almond and soy flour for baking?

I just bought the flax seed (ground) and see a lot of recipes calling for soy and almond fours.

    1) Are they just purchased in the regular baking aisle, or do I have to go to the granola part of the store?

    2) Did you find you used them as much as flax?

Thanks so much! As you can see I'm looking to somewhat expand my food horizons.

I've never bought them, but in the supermarkets here, I've seen both in the same section as the ground flax meal.

I make my own almond flour. As for the soy flour? I buy that in the same area of the store I buy whole flax seeds. Bob's Red Mill soy flour.

I don't use soy flour very often at all. I do use almond flour for quite a few things.

Brook-- how do you make almond flour? Do you have a mill? Thanks for the information!

I have only two recipes calling for the soy flour, and one is for pasta, so I'm holing off on it for the time being...but the almond flour seems more prevalent in recipes.

I have Bob's Soy Flour but it's really bitter. I've only used it a couple of times, I don't like it at all. I'd love to get some almond flour but it's over $12 for one little bag around here!

Re: Do you buy almond and soy flour for baking?

I found the almond flour at the grocery store but I did not want to pay $19 lb for it. Maybe it is cheaper somewhere else. So far, I have stuck to the flaxseed meal recipes. Much cheaper for me. If someone knows where to buy the almond flour for cheap, let me know which store.

Yep. I just pop almonds in my trusty coffee bean grinder and grind the heck out of them. I paid $9.99 for my grinder at Wal-mart. Works great and saves me tons of money. You can buy a pound of almonds a *lot* cheaper than $19. Not only that, but then it's always fresh. I have a 'thing' about that. lol

I buy ground flax seed, protein powder (ie. protein isolate) almond flour , walnut meal and soy flour. I also have purchased some vital wheat gluten. I have not yet used the gluten and I can't use the soy or almond flour/walnut meal until I get to the nut rung...but I got them because I saw so many recipes including these ingredients that I want to keep them on hand for later. I keep the stuff in the fridge to keep it fresh. This stuff really expands your ability to cook a variety of "substitutes" for bread items....plus the nut oils are healthy and good for you! I get alot of my stuff at Trader Joes or Whole foods Market FYI...

                        Hi Cleo
Make sure you try Ellizen's bread - it's delicious!
You only need flax for that one too.
