  • Time Goals and making them work in a practical world... it can happen!

I am going to talk about a strategy I realized which has REALLY helped me the last 2 weeks.

In large part due to this epipheny I'm about to share with you, I've been cheat-free and have exercised nearly every day since setting this constraints for myself! And I've never looked back! And I've lost more weight than ever before.

So many of us set time goals for ourselves. I know right now I'm taking part in an outstandingly exciting challenge. We've all chosen our goals for New Year's, and so far we're losing a lot of weight working towards our New Year's Eve Goals.

Granted, time goals are not always practical for everyone, if it motivates you, it's better to shoot for the stars and miss, than to shoot for New York and hit Moose Lake.

It had been really tough lately for me to keep exercising and eating right, because of my prior habits on this way of eating in the past.

Just the other day, by chance, I said to myself, "What if this was the last 2 weeks before the end of the challenge? Would I work harder? Would I exercise everyday? Would I be more stringent in my eating habits than ever?"
A light bulb illuminated as I realized that if it were, in fact, the last 2 weeks of this challenge, o the things I'd do to get to goal at that last minute!

It was then and there I decided that I was going to treat every day as though it was within those last two weeks of December. Since then, I've not only exercised everyday, but I've stepped it up a bit. I now drink all my water. I eat every meal with meticulous preparation to ensure that each one of those 'fictional' last 2 weeks will yield me the greatest results and that I will hit goal by December 31!

Too many times have I sought after a goal, just to goof around for three months and then put in the effort the last 2 weeks. This time around, I don't want any regrets. I don't want to look back and say, "If only I'd exercised that week, I'd be down five more pounds!" I don't want any regrets this time around.

For me, every day is going to be one of those days I'd realize in those last couple of weeks in December where each and every one of us are going to work harder than ever to achieve those goals we have set for ourselves!

And what a difference it has made already.

To whit... I think that so many of us are the hurry-up-and-wait-until-the-last-minute society. McD's says we can drive through the window if we're running late. We can rent through Netflix because we just don't have the time. Everyone promises us time, and says, "Go ahead! Wait until the lasy minute... Fed EX and Kinkos are even there for us!"

Because of this, and because of the way we were trained to be, we tend to goof around, not realizing that in such things as exercise and following a pragmatic eating regimen, it is essential these things be done everyday.

We don't stop watering and fertilizing the apple tree for three months and then expect it to put forth fruit just because we gave it two weeks of water and fertilizer in the end.

Why should we expect fruit from our bodies through lack of daily care?

Therefore, the "last 2 weeks" theory, an epipheny for me, really has changed my way of thinking. New parameters are being set, and my paradigm has been shifted from the Kinko's drive-through girl, to the one who is nourishing that apple tree everyday, knowing that in the end, I will have the fruits of hitting goal as my reward!

So try looking at things in a new light... whether it's a challenge, a wedding, a reuinion... treat each day as though it is in those last two weeks before the event. You're down to the wire. Live it TODAY.

Maybe you'll discover the solution you've been looking for has been right in front of you the whole time!

    Great post cleo..

I find that long term time goals are useless for me. I make much shorter ones as well, and I don't necessarily put parameters on them. For example: I've made a goal of a triathalon in the spring. But knowing me i'll sit on my butt til then, so, I've also made a goal of running a mile without stopping (and NOT downhill. ;p). To do this i've broken it down (kind of like the coolrunnings site) into running 45 seconds at a time this week. And, another goal: do 3 miles of walking/running at least 3 times a week. At least then I at least know i can WALK a 5k. ;-P

Or: 120 is my goal. so i made a halloween goal of 125. etc...

Same concept - the idea is to give yourself things to work on in the short run - and things that you know you will be able to accomplish at some point, and have to accomplish in order to get to the big goal.

That is an excellent idea, knick knack! It keeps you incrementally working towards a very specific goal, with very specific tasks.

Dr Phil mentions, as does Dr Atkins, that it is very important to be specific when discussing goals. We not only have to be real with outrselves, but we have to be realistic regarding such things as the laws of physics (darn Newton and his big, fat apple).

My goal for loss by a certain date is very concrete, but my working towards that consists of more vagueries than does yours: no cheating, counting calories, eating only when hungry and exercising 5 out of 7 days per week.

Regardless of method, when we both look back, will we be glad we worked as hard as we did to do the most we could do, or will we wish we had done more?

I think I can safely say that if we keep up what we're doing, we'll both be extremely happy to have known we honestly gave it all we could when it comes down to the wire. And there's nothing better than that!

I know you'll rock that triathlon...and, naturally, I'll want details! I love reading about the events you've partaken in.

Some may not like the man, pompous $$$ is what I've heard recently, but I like Dr. Phil. Yes he makes more money then me, and yes, he got his start on t.v. from Oprah, but you have to admit....the man's got a point. Thanks for pointing that out, Cleo.

I have Dr. Phil's "7 Key's to Weightloss" and although I don't follow his ideas of food, I have used the book for climbing out of depression and finding out that the world doesn't revolve around me.....wow! What a concept! Woo hooo!

        Thanks, Cleo!

Great post Cleo. It is so true. I set myself a short term goal to lose 24 pounds before my holiday. I am now less than three weeks away from it and am really stepping it up and hoping that I can lose those 8 pounds and hit goal. I will then focus fully on the NYE challenge and rather than busting a gut in December, I will keep in mind what you've said and really try hard every day.

Re: Time Goals and making them work in a practical world... it can happen!

I still have concerns about setting weight goals within a time frame.

We've all experienced the fact that our bodies do not follow a schedule and that weight loss can pause and stall and go really, really slowly no matter how consistently we work out and no matter how well we eat. We don't know WHEN it will happen, and to WHOM, but it could be two weeks from now, and it could be US.

I work out a minimum of 45 min of cardio per day, and hard cardio. I also alternate upper and lower body weights. I have never cheated. I eat what I am supposed to eat. This time around, the scale has moved incredibly slowly. If I had set a goal to lose 25 lbs within 3 months, I would have quit by now. I could no more set a goal for how much to lose by December than I could set a goal to reach the moon in my car by January.

To me, it seems like a setup. Every time I brag about my friend Cleo who lost 30 lbs in 30 days, I have a moment of panic about "what will happen if she stalls for 3 months at some point?" or "what if, 20 lbs from goal, she stops losing for 6 mo?"

Just my odd ramblings on htis topic, as usual.

Re: Time Goals and making them work in a practical world... it can happen!

Thanks so much for the feedback! I know that the reason I have been working so hard is because I don't want to sit here on New Year's Eve and ask myself, "Coulfd I have done more?"

Finelly, I totally get your point! All of us know that there's the very real possibility we won't hit that golden number come the due date. But why not shoot for the stars? At the very least we can say to ourselves, "You know, I didn't hit precisely where I wanted to be, but had I not exercised everyday, I never would have made it half as far". I wouldn't dare cheat in the last 2 weeks. Nor would I dare do anything to hamper success! This spills over into three months previous and I'm living for the end result and not for the possible future! It's so exciting, and I know I'll make it because it seems so natural!

There's no failure in giving it our all--now--this very minute! ...and there's no use putting off hard work, especially if we want results!

There is nothing worst than not having tried.

If we we fail to try, we try to fail.

{{{Lisa}}} I'm right there with you! Dr Phil rules school in that book.

{{{Zarabelle}}} That's right! Treat everyday as though it were a day in December. You'll be amazed at how much father you'll be when those days actually approach! I love your thinking!

{{{iwill}}} you are so awesome! Thank you for the kudos! I really appreciate them!

{{{Finelly}}} Sheesh. I wish you'd voice your opinion from time to time... *tongue implanted firmly in cheek*
