  • My (re)introduction

    Hi Everyone -

I've been lurking here for years (including back when I first started Atkins in 2003), but I thought that it was time to officially jump in and (re)introduce myself. STACed seems like the right place for me, since I've largely been maintaining over the last 2 years, but with a new job and major stress over the last 6 months I've had a gain that somehow turned from "water weight" into "real weight" without me even realizing that it was happening!

So here's my story: I started Atkins in August 2003. I wasn't sure Atkins would work, but I thought it was worth a try, since I didn't have time to diet and be hungry. I lost 6 pounds on induction, and by Christmas, I'd met my goal of 128-130. (I had been pushing for 125, but discovered that it was too difficult to maintain that weight - hungry all the time, etc. - so I adjusted the number up. I was wearing mainly 4s and 6s, so I was happy there.

Through March 2005, I maintained that loss, gaining and losing a pound here and there, but never really getting higher than 131. I allowed myself some carby foods occasionally, but never had any trouble losing the weight gained from minor "cheats."

In March 2005, though, I started a new extremely stressful job (which I love, but it's still tough) and I reverted to some baaaad eating habits. I'd be completely faithful to Atkins during the week, but then on the weekends I'd eat icecream and chips and pizza, telling myself that I deserved it because of all of my stress and that lifetime maintenance means that I should eat more "normally," since I'll be eating this way for the rest of my life. (Stupid, stupid, I know.)

For several months, I seemed to get away with the weekend cheats. I'd gain weight (3 pounds or so) on the weekend, and then lose it during the week. But then, something happened. The weight gain crept up even higher, and I stopped being able to lose it during the week. Then I noticed that even when the scale numbers seemed low, my clothes were starting to get tight.

So - I finally got my butt in gear about a month ago and came back to Atkins and ADBB. I've lost about 3 pounds of the gain, but I'm really having trouble whooshing off the weight this time. I've started exercising more, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to do the dreaded thing of reducing my calories in order to lose the last few pounds.

So that's my story! Thanks to all who made it this far!

    welcome back lawyerchick!

STAC is a good place to be - supportive is the name of the game here!

Since you only have about 6 pounds to lose, it probably will go slow - however that's good as you won't just immediately gain it back when you go onto maintenance right?

Hi, Anna! It all comes down to calories in the end, even on Atkins.

So, say you were eating 2400 calories a day during the weekend, and your BMR (arbritrarily) is 1400 calories. This means that you would be eating in excess of 2,000 calories MORE than your body needed. Three days of this and you've already gained a pound of fat... keep it up over time, and suddenly you're higher than you thought possible.

      The calories do add up!

Atkins works because it keeps us full, thus enabling us to eat less while still feeling very satisfied. So, while WE might have food amnesia regarding cheats, our female fat cells don't.

On induction, don't worry about calories...however, after induction, you might want to start keeping track of them. It's possible to gain weight from eating too many calories--even on Atkins.

      Welcome home!

Thanks guys! It's great to be back.

Sorry I disappeared for a couple of days - I've been having computer problems. I've been going into board-withdrawal too. On the bright side, I lost a hard won 0.4. Not much, but I'll take it.
