What do you do with your families while on Atkins?? Perhaps make them move away?? No, seriously, do you seperate their food from yours while dieting?

I do not buy my kids junk food anyway(no chips or ice cream or cookies), they get pop or a treat whenever THEY buy it or once a week. I do know there are some foods we can eat the same. However, there are also some foods that they must have: cereal, milk , bread, tortillas, yogurt, ect...

I was just wondering if anyone kept their food in a special place or their families "no-no" food seperate? I know it is a wierd question... Thanks!

Also do you make meals that you all can eat and tweek yours, or just make them eat everything you eat??

    Re: Family and Food

Well, what I do is keep everything together for convenience sake. My husband perpares all our meals (Yay) so he usually makes a main mean dish and sides for him and the kids. I will have the meat and I usually have my own sides. I use cheese slices or cukes with dressing, sometimes deviled eggs, etc... If he makes something like spaghetti, I will have the sauce (not allowed on induction) over spaghetti squash. That is one of my favorites.

If you already serve meat at meals, you're half-way there. You just keep slowly adding in the lower glycemic foods as you go, and before you know it, the whole family is eating lower-carb right along with you.

I know that when I started I began by making slow changes:

cutting white rice with brown rice, until it's all brown rice

Buying red potatoes instead of white

Buying green beans instead of corn

      butter instead of margarine

Granted, while you can't eat potatoes or rice for awhile, your family still can. Byt the time you're on maintenance, they'll be eating what you're eating!

Things my kids now LOVE to eat as snacks:
      Hard-boiled eggs
      string cheese
      pepperoni slices
      olives
      yogurt
      broccoli
      celery
      blackberries

This not only fills them up more, but if you and hubby have blood sugar problems, guess who you passed them along to? That's right! Those cute little kidnicks!

Start slow and keep going. My family LOVES eating this way now!

        Re: Family and Food

My family eats all of their food from a can. The people at Pedigree allege that it is mostly meat, but I wonder sometimes!

Of course, my family is Booshie,my gorgeous doggy!

I know I am being silly, but I truly can't imagine the difficulty of managing a family AND weight loss.

I admire all of you who do.

          Re: Family and Food

In our family I have a low cupboard set aside just for the kids. Cereal, snacks and etc go only in there. It's easy for them to get to on their own and I don't accidentally come across it when I'm hungry so there's no temptation from it. I also keep their bread in the oven (when it's not in use of course ) and any treats their Nana brings or sends over. Out of sight out of mind works well for me!

            Re: Family and Food

This has never been a problem for me. I've always been the one who cooked most of the meals in our family. If we are all eating together, I fix foods that I can eat. Its not like I fix anything from another planet. I just don't fix potatoes, corn, rice or pasta anymore. If they request those things, then I will fix them for them.

I have people all the time tell me that Atkins is too expensive and that it is too complicated to cook for the family and to cook for themselves, I just don't understand this. We all eat chicken, meats, fish, eggs, veggies and salads. What is everyone else eating that is a big concern?

As for cereal, bread and stuff, it is in the house and I've noticed that it is eaten less often than it used to be. My family is actually perferring to eat the Atkins way.

I tend to keep all of my low carb foods in one cupboard. I don't feel tempted if I see high carb foods.

Thank you I got some good ideas now! Those cookies I was telling you about in my other thread, well I hide them in the microwave. I have to already put away some of my things! Well the cheese! I think my kids must be part mice!! I think I will be safe with everything elese because it is all just veggies and stuff they eat.

Now I just have to find a place that has recipes. So far so good, as long as I have things I don't want there food so far........ It helps that I don't have bad stuff in the house too.
