  • Sweetner question

I know splenda is acceptable. Yet last time I tasted that in my coffee I almost died, it was terrible. (unless mine was old)

I was wondering alternatives. I have heard some mention Davinchi. What is that? Also my brother said Equal is a no-no? Can you tell me acceptable sweetners that are better tasting. What do you all use??

Also I know I am only on day 9 but there are going to be major temptations at my brother-in-laws part at his bbq tomorrow. Cake and drinking....

So what can I make that I can have that is sweet? I haven't cheeted yet but....... Thanks for any little ideas? Can I have sugar-free jello? I dont' know???? Thanks!

    Re: Sweetner question

This is what moochie said on another thread I found:

    "Artificial Sweeteners
You must determine which artificial sweeteners agree with you, but the following are allowed: sucralose (marketed as Splenda), saccharin, cyclamate and acesulfame-K. Natural sweeteners ending in the suffix "-ose," such as maltose, fructose, etc., should be avoided. However, certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Saccharin has been extensively studied, and harmful effects were produced in the lab when fed to rats only in extremely high doses. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has removed saccharin from its list of carcinogens, basing its decision upon a thorough review of the medical literature and the National Institute of Science's statement that there is "no clear association between saccharin and human cancer." It can be safely consumed in moderation, meaning no more than three packets a day. Saccharin is marketed as Sweet'n Low.

We discourage the use of aspartame (marketed as NutraSweet and Equal) because of clinical observations that it slows weight loss in certain individuals. The FDA has approved the herb stevia for use only as a supplement, not as a sweetener.

The Atkins preference, however, is sucralose (Splenda), the only sweetener made from sugar. Sucralose is safe, noncaloric and does not raise blood sugar. It has been used in Canada for years, and the FDA recently approved it after reviewing more than 100 studies conducted over the past 20 years. Note that each packet of sugar substitute contains about 1 gram of carbohydrate, so don't forget to include the amount in your daily totals.

So I guess it is Sweet and Low? I wonder if I get a different splenda , mabey mine is old? I want atleast a decaff coffee tomorrow with my dh

      Re: Sweetner question

you can test the sweetners and see what you like Splenda is too sweet for me and triggers my cravings.

Davinci syrups are sweetened with Splenda. try your coffee without any sweetener. you are going to find as you progress on Atkins your taste buds will detect suttle sweet flavors in even veggies!

      Happy low carbing.

I can already taste better now. I don't ever use salt. I know it is in my chicken slices alittle and I had alittle in my chicken broth this week. I have only once tried the Splenda in my coffee and it was like there was lysol in it

So were does one get the davinchi stuff, is it liquid?

Can I sneak another question in here Ok, I was looking on a can of pumpkin and it has alot of carbs! I thought we could have pumpkin?

sure mix 1 ounce of cream cheese with 1T cocoa powder until smooth and then divid into 4 blobs freeze eat only one at a time and allow it to melt in your mouth and run it around the inside of your mouth cause we have fat pleasure sensors in our mouths (Bet you didn't know that)
Megs not to late does it with cream and cocoa powder and has it all as a serving but I can't stop at one serving of that
You right now might want to add one serving of your favorite sweetner to the mixture but to me cream cheese is sweet and could just eat an ounce hunk as a treat.

Sweet peppers will taste like candy in a few weeks to you if you don't use sweetners and I love to crunch tem too.

              Re: Sweetner question

Sounds wonderful! I just want alittle something. I have to stare cake and chips and such in the eye tomorrow. I think I will bring my own drink and I might bring some chicken legs out there. I also thought of bringing mock potato salid to the bbq. I just don't want alot of people to know I am dieting untill they can see it themselves. (I have failed too many times in the past)

              Thank you for your help!!

well you can boil radishes and they will lose their color and you can cube them just like taters and they have similar texture. they also lose that hot radish taste. Can you tell I'm not a fan of cauliflower mock potato salad?

take some coleslaw or a 7 layer salad without the peas.
you can use a one ounce slice of cheese you buy in the deli (make sure it is real cheese not cheese food) and lay it flat on parchment paper use a butter knife to cut it into squares about the size of cheese nip crackers and then nuke then for about 1 min or until the cheese is bubblely and just starting to change color. cool and voila you got chips. if you use flax meal for fiber/constipation then you can make some flax chips and take a sourcream or mayo based dip for you. have a great time.
