  • Need suggestions........

I reinducted on 11/05. I have been on vacation, so it has been easy. 11/15 I go back to work. I work midnights shift as a Corrections Officer. I worry I will let myself fall prey to all the high carb meals they seem to feed us. We cannot take a lunch behind the gate with us. So I was thinking I will eat dinner before I make my hour drive to work. Then I will take some maybe chicken breast in my coat pocket along with a couple string cheese. Hopefully I can find some celery or other veggie in the dining hall. Just to get through the night. Up until now, I was off the bandwagon. Now that I am back on track I refuse to let myself fall back off the wagon.

If anyone has any suggestions of food I could sneak into work to get me through my 8 hour middle of the night shift. PLEASE share them. I appreciate it dearly.

Do you have to sneak it in? Hmmm, I would say cheese slices are good. Cut up cucumbers and celery in a baggie. Ah, can you take some chicken broth and put some cooked chicken in it? A boiled egg? I dunno? If you don't have to sneak it in I would say pack a nice lunch with tuna/ham/egg/turkey salad with some celery to dip into it or something like that.

Yeah, I will be sneaking it in. Shame on me. I don't feel bad about sneaking my ATKINS friendly food in. The cucumber and celery idea is good. Thanks.

First of all...hi!! I work in probation, so we're in similar fields. That's definitely a bummer that you have to sneak your own food in if you want to stay on Induction!! It's doable though. Ziploc bags can become your friend. What you need is something portable that you can eat with your hands that's a no muss, no fuss type of thing. The first thing that came to my mind are some rollups. At your grocery store's deli, choose some turkey, chicken or roast beef that doesn't have sugar or fillers or anything else yucky. Roll slices around cheese, a pickle stick, veggies....whatever you want. Make a few and put them in a ziploc bag. It can then be stuffed into a pocket or bag easily. If you want to get REALLY fancy, some stores (I saw some at Trader Joe's) carry wide lettuce leaves specifically to use as wrappers. Boiled eggs are portable, as are cheese sticks, pepperoni slices and flax bread. In addition, you could use the basic crustless quiche recipe and add whatever you want. When I make those, they cook up firm enough that I can put a wedge in a ziploc bag and eat it cold or room temperature with my hands.

        Hope this helps!!!

Thank you those are some great suggestions. I will try all of them believe me!!

When I first started this WOE in 8/04 I worked at a different facility in a different dept. There I was able to take my lunch on the unit and store it in the break room. That was nice. Now I am not so fortunate, that is what allowed me to fall off the bandwagon the last time. I REFUSE to let that happen again. I will just have to put more effort into it for work. I think eating dinner before I leave for work will help me tremendously. Then I can just take portable snacks for the 8 hours I am at work. THANKS AGAIN LADIES.

Cant you just explain that you are insulin sensitive and cant eat processed foods? Don't they have to accomodate you? Couldnt you ask to have certain foods available to you?

As a corrections officer, are you a state employee?

                Woman,

Excellent idea! I think that a doctor could write a note that she was borderline diabetic (I bet you could be if you eat right before the blood stick) and then by law they would have to accomodate her. Evil thoughts...I am sure there is a way around the rule.
