  • stuck at old weight

    Hi everyone,

I remember reading somewhere here about how you can get stuck at a certain weight if you weighed that weight for a long time. (Does that make any sense? LOL.)
I'm stuck at 11 stone 7 and can't seem to make the scales move. I was this weight for ages at one point.

Can anyone explain what this memory is please and how long it lasts?

    Thanks,

    Felix

It's called your "setpoint". Just stick with it, you'll get through it. Google setpoint, there's alot on the net about it. Hope I could help..

it is a falacy as there is absolutly no medical studies proving it exists just something folk will tell you to make you feel better. you way that amount for a long time cause you made food intake chices and calorie out put choices that kept your cals in balance so you maintaned. you can do that at any weight you put your mind to.

As we get smaller we lose basal cals so we either have to eat less or exercise more it is that simple. Based on your caloric intake that you chose with your food choices from day one of Atkins you have been working to this point. Some folk pick a very large marging below what they expend and can make it allthe way to goal weight without ever hitting a "setpoint" or stalling weight. other have to keep adjusting all the way by decreaseing their cals eatten and increasing their exercise and lifestyle activities.
You can up your out put and the scales will move again but remember it is 3500 cals deficiet to get an actual pound of fat lost so it is going to take time to get it moving.

makesure you are notdeficient in any of your vits and minerals too as that can slow your bodily processes and slow your weight loss. if you use fitday you can look in your reports section and see how you are doing and supplement accordingly.

      happy low carbing.

Is it that simple, 2big? I could argue that until the cows come home. I absolutely believe that our bodies find points where it's more comfortable and it battles to stay there for periods of time.

Case in point? My average of 400 calories a day burned up in aerobic/resistance training and my 900-1300 calorie and <25 grams of carb a day intake. This should, by all accounts (AMR/BMR/etc etc etc) produce a loss of at least 2lbs of fat a week- and here I sit - since November 7th - at the *same weight*, and having lost a total of 2 measureable inches (not impressed. LOL). Ironically? It's the same weight it took me over 5 months to bust through last time and is the same weight I stayed at effortlessly before baby #2 for 3+ years. (Of course I was in a lot worse shape then! LOL)

Now, can I look back at the last time I was this weight and it took me 5 months to bust past it and say that my menu at that time was part of the problem? Absolutely. Will it take me as long this time? God. I hope not. LOL

          Re: stuck at old weight

I think there are points where our bodies tend to naturally plateau. What I recommend is to work harder when this happens. Change it up. Try a new exercise. Up what you're doing. Just get through that plateau.

I sat at about 200 lbs on my way up for a long time. On the way down, this summer, I sat at 200 lbs for EVER. I don't even know how many weeks it was, but I posted about it a LOT.

Be patient. Once your body decides to let go, the weight comes off very fast for awhile again.

you assume your cal counts are accurate from your sites but are they truely yours? Obviously not cause the humanbody will not defy the rules of thermodymanics even Dr Atkins said that in expalining the Atkins advantage in chapter 11 of DANDR. many folk are suprized how wrong the amount of cals they think they are burning are.

                Re: stuck at old weight

From my sites? What sites? You mean the heart rate moniter I wear that is set for my height/weight/age that tracks my heart rate while I workout rather than one of the sites that give a rough estimate based solely on an activity?

I'm not walking at a leisurely pace - as you well know, and I assume nothing. I absolutely believe my heart rate moniter to be considerably more accurate than any of the silly sites out there. That's why I invested in one after researching it.

Are you trying to tell me that at an average heart rate of 152 (with a minimum of 117 and a max of 182) over the course of almost 60 minutes is burning less than 500 calories for a woman my height/age/weight?!! And that that somehow violates the laws of theromdynamics?! Come on. LOL

That said, it still does not account for the calorie restriction alone - assuming that I'm not burning the amount of calories with my exercise that my HR moniter reflects. If my body were not comfy here, I can't imagine it fighting me this hard to go lower..not once, not twice, but three times.

                  Re: stuck at old weight

no heartrate monitor can tell any one exactly how many cals they are burning it is an estimate based on all the body types they tested working out in that rate. if your resting heart rate didn't match the exercise subjects in the stuf=dy you results can be off as just one example of how varied the results can be. Even the temp of ypur work out room can effect your cal burning total during exercise and it is your total caloric burn from all sources metabolic, thermal, and active life style that need to exceed your intake.

You yourself know your body fat percent right now isn't the same as it was when you were at this weight of 3+ yrs before your last prego. So your cal burn is different for the same workout yet that monitor would say it is the same.

if you were in a controlled enviornment with all measurements being taken of energy expenditure you'd find that if your not morphing your body growning more lean tissues and shedding fat mass then you are either burning less then you believe or eating more cals then you believe cause they can't vanish.

Your differential can be small enough that you don't see a dramic change either. if the actual differential is 100 cals it will still take over a month to get one pound of actual mass change
