  • Protein Shakes

Hi everyone...new to the board, but not to Atkins. I was very successful the first time around (lost 17lbs and kept it off for 2 years). I had a little "relapse" over this past holiday season (plus the stress of finishing my MBA while working full time).

I'm starting a clean induction this weekend, and have a question regarding protein shakes - are these acceptable? The shake is made of whey protein and contains only 3 carbs total (1 sugar carb). Has anyone used these in the past?

    Thanks!

    Re: Protein Shakes

I used to drink Isopure Zero Carb protein drink while during OWL. That particular one had zero carbs, but I still would not have felt it appropriate to drink during the first 14 day Induction cycle. Granted according to your counter you don't have much to lose, I would still take the opportunity of the 14 day Induction to work on that sweet tooth as much as possible and any sweetness cravings. I would advise against having them.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

I will take your advice and stay away from the shakes during induction...I usually add a tablespoon of peanut butter when I make them (for better taste) - and I know the peanuts are not induction friendly...

Yes, only a few pounds to go but I want to shake the bad habbit of eating sweets as soon as I can...it got a little crazy with the cookies this year!

          welcome back to ADBB

controlling your wanting of sweets will help you become a successful loser.

If you need more reasons to not drink them go do a little search on what the body does to excess protein intake ( turns it to sugar for storage) and its effect on blood sugar control and fat burning. Remember Atkins is a ketogenic plan ( that means we use fats for fuel) and anything that turns off fat burning isn't good for your Atkins.

Wow thanks for the info...I will do some more research on the shakes...I just got hooked on them becuase they are so easy to make and very filling. In the warmer months, I am an avid runner - so they never had an adverse effect on me - but now that I'm running less (some weeks not at all) I don't want an excess of anything!
