  • Things to do besides eat...looking for ideas

    Hi, all. Just made up a list for myself of things I can do to sidetrack/distract myself when I get the urge to eat (because I'm bored or I want to, not because I'm hungry). I'm looking for more ideas...what would you all add to the list? I'm looking for things to do that would take maybe 15 minutes, wouldn't take a lot of special equipment or knowledge, and could be done at home (or possibly work), some that are fun or just plain goofy to distract me from the fridge!

    Here's my list so far...
    • Practice the guitar or other musical instrument for 15 minutes.
    • Play some funky music and dance for one song.
    • Read a poem, short story or a chapter from a novel, just for fun.
    • Write a postcard to a friend.
    • Call up or email a friend.
    • Walk around the block.
    • Drink 16 ounces of water.
    • Go put on your favorite shirt.
    • Draw a picture or color in a coloring book.
    • Purge old files and papers for 15 minutes.
    • Try on at least 3 hats.
    • Look at a photo album.
    • Play solitaire or another computer or card game.
    • Do 15 minutes of yoga poses.
    • Do 15 minutes of tai chi.
    • Take a shower or bath.
    • Walk up and down the stairs 15 times.
    • Take a 15-minute power nap.
    • Write in your journal for 15 minutes.

    *Play with your dog or cat or whatever pet you might have (they'll love you for it).
    *Groom your pet or clean their sleeping or pottying area (depending on what you may have)
    *Draw up plans for a dream vacation.
    *Kiss or hug someone (maybe a little more)

        This isn't 15 minutes but taking a class somewhere is always a good idea. Crafting, dancing, writing etc. Whatever tickles your fancy. There is nothing like educating yourself and staying away from unhealthy stuff.

            Play in the snw for 15 minutes (if you have any)
            Take 15 minutes and make sure the checkbook is balanced
            take a 15 (or more)minute shower/bath(nice and relaxing)

              I would suggest hemp macrame or beading. I love making new necklaces and bracelets and anklets for my thinning appendages!! Make a snug fitting anklet and watch it slide lower and lower over your ankle bone as you lose over the next few months.

                work a big jigsaw on a table you can leave it on untilyou get done.
                write a letter to some one you care about.
                RAK (random act of kindness) somebody like a neighbor shovel their walk if you got snow take in the mail or paper for an elderly neighbor go visit them.

                  Give yourself a manicure, pedicure, facial etc. I find it hard to eat when my nails are wet or I have a mask on my face.

                    Watch some DVDs or Television (IS that too un-PC to mention)

                    I just bought the 3rd Season of the family guy so I have been watching that - good for a laugh. That'll keep you occupied for a while!

                    Also if you have a partner - there is snuggling ?

                          Thanks, y'all. The knitting/crochet/cross-stitch ideas got me thinking about beading, which I used to do and like -- and when you're trying to corral those teeny beads, it's hard to think of food!

                          Also liked the idea of visiting an elderly neighbor. My partner's grandma lives with us downstairs, so I can go visit her anytime, and she seems to enjoy having someone to chat with and ask how her day is going. Great idea!

                          I put all the ideas on business-sized cards, so I can keep them in my pocket or purse and flip them out when I've got the munchies and need a distraction. I figure I can tell myself, "just do this other thing for 15 minutes, then if you're still hungry, you can have something."

                            Take some extra time with your tootsies (feet)...moisturing, filing callouses...

                            Think about all the great walking they will help you do to lose weight!!!!!
