  • VERY discouraging...

I realized tonight - or actually FACED tonight- the fact that I have a big belly that hangs down a bit, and it occured to me that there is NO WAY all of this skin is going to stretch back up to where it once belonged. I have a million stretch marks and the skin is all wavy and baggy. I looked up excess skin removal on the Internet and found that its between 8,500 -10,000 dollars. This is very annoying. It's not fair that a person who is fat and decides to lose the weight has to then deal with something horrid afterward.

So, any stories about this that might cheer me up? I know that Brook says exercise will make things go where they belong, but this skin? I have been using firming lotion everyday after i shower. HELP!

    Re: VERY discouraging...

I've had 4 kids and I'm 47 years old. I don't think we can compare belly stories!!!

You have youth and elasticity on your side. Even if I can never afford to fix the belly hang, I will look at that loose skin as a badge of honor for being successful on this WOE and having 4 healthy kids.

Once, years ago, during one of many earlier unsuccessful weight loss attempts, I remember thinking, "I'll never look good naked, so why bother?". What a crazy excuse to go off a diet.

After 26 years of marriage, the only people who see me naked are my husband and gynecologist. My dh is still around, and I pay my gynecologist well to endure the sight.

DO NOT FRET now that the final results of this WOE will not be perfect. I never had a perfect body, and when I graduated high school I weighed 120. Look at those rich stars who seem to have perfect bodies-they still aren't satisfied with how they look, and get all kinds of 'plasty' done.

by the way, I still have a lot of weight to lose, so we don't know if I can get rid of the belly hang or not. You just won't know til you get there. Just don't let this influence your positive results so far.

You deserve to feel better, look better, and raise that baby sitting on your lap to learn healthy habits by following your example. Even with a belly hang...

Brook is getting a tummy tuck to fix hers

Just think what the alternative it, belly skin still full of fat and hanging out there and don't focus on it.

Use the end results to remind you of how it used to be should you think about jumping off at goal. that loose skin is a very very effective tool to make that not happen.

        Happy low carbing.

            Re: VERY discouraging...

I thought it was pretty discouraging too, until I filled it back up with 30 pounds of ugly fat. Now it won't even tuck into size 10 jeans like it used to for a year and a half.....

At 51 my only option is a tummy tuck after re-losing the weight, but you can probably do a lot of firming up at your age....and the hanging skin can be hidden with cute clothes, believe me!! But not the belly. EWWWWWWWWW

Mine hangs down so bad that I grow cyst in the hang over part. I keep it really clean and dry and I still get them. My dermatologist said that if we keep documenting that I get them, that my insurance company will have to pay for a tummy tuck because it is dangerous. I had two c-sections and the cyst grow on the c-section scars.

thanks for the info. I sure hope I am lucky enough to have it tighten up enough so that I don't feel nasty!

I can tell you that the last time I did Atkins I was 43 years old and after losing 78 pounds, reaching my goal weight that I had the flattest stomach I ever had. You are young and this shouldn't be a problem. If you feel like it is there is only one cheap solution and that is sit ups. Get those stomach muscles working now if you can. You age is definately working for you, your skin should go back without a problem.

Be patient, it'll pay off in the end.

                    Re: VERY discouraging...

The last time I reached my goal weight, I had lost around 60 pounds, and found that I had quite a serious problem with lose skins on the abdomen. Interestingly, it just slowly tightened up over the next year, or so. Of course, now I'm about 15 years older, so who knows if it ever will, or not.

If you are interested in a cosmetic procedure, you might look into Thermage. It's now used only on the face, but I undestand that the FDA is going to very soon approve it for use on the body. Abdominal treatment would probably be in the $2,000 range.

Yes, exercise will do it. I have lost 50 odd pounds and my stomach is only half the size it was, and no loose skin. Look at Kent's pics - he had a big tummy and now there is no loose skin. Exercise, both aerobic and resistance, will, with dedication on your part, get rid of the 'flaps' (my name for 'em). But you have to do it while the weight loss is going on. Any exercise that you feel in your abdominal muscles is the right one.

                      Good luck!

So, blah! Apparently I need to be doing some serious sit ups. I guess its a sacrifice I can make for the flappy to go away (or never come for that matter).

I had surgery already to remove a large belly flap. It hung down to my knees. I still have another one in my future, as this doctor did not finish everything. It was all covered by insurance. They removed 26lbs of skin and I went home the next morning.

If you are having problems, infections, rashes, etc...there is a chance it will be covered.

It is the best thing I ever did.

Last time I lost weight w/ Atkins I had the turkey gobbler thing going on under my chin. It's kinda hard to conceal with clothing during the summer. Any advice on how to get rid of it?
