  • Anyone use bentonite?

Hi ya'll! I'm back for a 2nd go round. I'm so excited too. Last summer I lost almost 20 pounds on induction, but then I kind of stopped the WOL altogether and went back to my old evil ways.

Now I have decided to at least try to do a 2 week, very strict induction to see is I can't get the weight falling off again.

Not too long ago I bought a powder concoction from my local health food store that is supposed to be very thurough with cleansing your digestive system. Its a powdered mixture of bentonite and psyllium and some herbal stuff like mushroom root and slippery elm bark and maybe even some others.

I'd like to incorporate this with my diet instead of going out and purchasing other fiber supplements and such, especailly since the bentonite /pysllium stuff was rather expensive and I don't want it to got to waste.

Can anyone share their experiences with this stuff while on induction? I don't think it should slow down the weight loss, but I wondered is anyone has had success with it.

I did some research and it is definitely meant to cleanse the colon of parasites and toxic materials. The one thing I do know about the stuff is that you have to drink TONS of water while using it. At least 1/2 your body weight in oz. But I do that already anyway.

    Thanks!!

OK, I'll say straight up that I do not agree with 'detoxing' stuff. I have posted on this topic before, and your body does NOT need detoxing. The liver is self-cleansing and all you need to do is drink water and get a good sleep each night. Detox is just a marketing ploy by the pharmaceutical companies trying to sell quick and easy health to the gullible (only my opinion, of course!).

However, I found some links and a definition of Bentonite. It is primarily used in the oil drilling industry because of it's ability to absorn water and swell up, becoming impervious to other minerals encountered in drilling for oil. Also used in cat litter, cosmetics etc.

A clay mineral that is composed principally of three-layer clays, such as montmorillonite, and widely used as a mud additive for viscosity and filtration control. Commercial bentonite ores vary widely in amount and quality of the swelling clay, sodium montmorillonite. Ores of lower quality, those with more calcium-type montmorillonite, are treated during grinding by adding one or more of the following: sodium carbonate, long-chain synthetic polymers, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), starch or polyphosphates. These help make the final product meet quality specifications. Unfortunately, the additives may not remain effective in "the real mud world" when in use at the rig due to hardness ions in the water, high temperature, bacterial attack, mechanical shear-degradation and other factors that can render these additives ineffective.

      Two things:

      1) Detoxifying agents are "new age" bull crap. Really they are. Like analog said, your liver detoxes everything 24/7.

      2) If you need fiber / had bad fiber experiences in the past on atkins make sure of the following two things:
      a) You are NOT taking a multivitamin with iron in it. If you are taking one with iron you can get constipated super fast. Trust me, I had nightmarish experiences with this in the past.
      b) Try eating flaxseed. You can get "bob's redmill flax" for about $2.50 a pound. There are endless recipe variations on it too. Its great stuff and pure fiber.

      HOpe that helps.

        ok. sorry I asked.

I am a firm believer in the all that "new age crap" after recently completing a 10 day fast called the Master Cleanse.

I feel great and seem to have way more energy than before.

I just wanted to see if anyone had used this product while on induction and if so what the results had been for them.

Well, how you spend your money is your business. But as for real science, atkins method is proven - I dont think this product you speak of will help in anyway, to my knowledge.

I would be careful. You can do serious damage with some of those products designed to "cleanse"--even if you bought them at a health food store. You only have to take fiber supplements if you need them, as RationalBeing has said. I get enough fiber from veggies so that I don't have to.

What was in the "master cleanse"?? It probably just made you go poo poo right?? I'm with everyone else....just take some fiber supps....or add more flax to your diet. Hey...we need some bugs in our system, so "detoxing" isn't always a good thing. Mother nature does a pretty good job with our bodies considering all the crap that is in the food and the air. BTW I think I use that bentonite in my koi pond to kill the string algae
