    Re: Atkins and small children

I kind of disagree with a few commments. I do make different meals for my kids. I have a 5,3 and 1 year old. They (as well as my husband) are very much on the thin side According to our pediatrician, children at least to age 4 need starches. I have found this to be true, as I did try to feed them only low carb meals the first time I did Atkins. My 5 and 3 year olds (then 4 and 2) began to lose weight--aahh. So, I talked to their doctor--they definitely don't need the junk food, but they do have to have more carbs than adults since they have much higher metabolisms (mostly).

What definitely helped me with any temptations was to not make those certain meals or single foods that I knew would cause a craving or temp me

As for me, my daughters are on good weight. They have not loose weight because they eat fruits, milk, and bread made with whole grains.

Eating low carb doesn't mean they don't have GOOD carbs in their diet. My children absolutely eat veggies, whole grains, fruits, & legumes, so where is the issue?!

Children absolutely have different nutritional needs than adults do, but the truth of the matter is that most children get more nutrition out of a bare bones low-carb meal than they do a school lunch or from the McDonalds they're getting 2-5 times a week.

Doctors have been telling us for years and years that we ALL require huge amounts of "starches", as you called it. They were full of garbage then and they're full of it now!

Weight loss would be inevitable at first in most people switching over to a lower-carb way of eating as it has a pretty powerful diuretic effect at first as well as the burning up of stored glucose - so that piece of it shouldn't be surprising. That said, if you feed the kids fruits, nuts, whole grains, veggies and legumes there's no need for fillers just for the sake of fillers and then everyone can still eat the same, low-carb meal at dinner time.

Just giving my opinion on what works best for my family... I kind of thought that's what we did here. I'm just not so inclined to disregard the advice of my children's doctor as "garbage" when it comes to what's nutritionally best for them. So far, following his advice hasn't let me down.

Considering most doctors have little to no training in nutrition, that's interesting, especially when you consider what the medical community's nutritional advice has done to the general population's waist measurements over the last 35 years or so - and that includes children. There are more obese children now than ever before, so I'm disinclined to be so easily led by any doctor when it comes to nutritional advice.

I'm glad you found what works for your family, but I'm still not sure how feeding kids processed junkfood or bleached flours/starches/sugar is a positive nutritional step?!

                That is so TRUE Brook!

It is also like that in Breastfeeding..you would be amazed at how little doc's know about it much less how to help a momma nurse when they are having trouble!! I garantee that they didn't have a breastfeeding 101 course in Med school! Any knowledge that they have about it has been learned because THEY are interested in it!!

Same with nutrition! The only reason that they would know anything more than the very base knowledge is if it took particular intrest to them and they actually studied it and applied it!

Not saying though that there aren't wonderful docs out there that haven't ..just saying that if they do it is because the have went above and beyond what the others do!

actually you are agreeing with everybody.

carbohydrates come is several subsets simple sugars, fibers, and complex carbs better known as starches. We see this on the nutritional labels of foods under total carbs it has fibers and sugars listed. all the remaining carbohydrate is complex carbs or starches. just about every food on the Atkins OWL list has starches as opposed to simple sugars as the carbs with the exception of the fruit and other fruits rungs which is a mixed lot. So feeding our kids Atkins is what your doc recomends just higher protions of the OWL rungs then you were giving them.
