  • Family Funeral Frustration

I had been doing SO WELL, but now I've got to start over. I had been on extended induction totaling 4 weeks, losing about 2 lbs a week steady, after losing 8 in the first 2 weeks. Then my boyfriend's grandmother died and we went to the funeral. Afterward I sat down to a lunch prepared by ladies at the church that was nothing but carbs! I was under pressure not to offend and I didn't want to make a scene by not eating, so I went off induction. Just when I was ready to start adding some good things in.

I've been back on for 2 days, and the sugar cravings and headaches are unbearable. I gained 5 lbs.! I haven't started to lose again, and I'm getting more and more frustrated! I just wonder how long it takes to start losing again, and how long these symptoms keep up?

    I appreciate any suggestions!

Saty, just chalk it up to a lesson learned and keep on going. You don't have to do the full two weeks of induction. I'd stay on induction long enough to get past the cravings and then go ahead and move into OWL like you had planned. Next time you're faced with those carbs remember how you feel today.

Amazing how bad that stuff is for you, isn't it??

Im sorry for your loss, Death I think is stressful for anyone and just get your self up and restart induction as they said above, to stop the cravings and all. What ever you do, dont let it stop your doing the diet it self.

        Re: Family Funeral Frustration

Sorry that you had such a difficult time. One month ago, I lost my step father. After the funeral there was a lunch with sandwiches and veggies and dip, and desserts. I took two sandwiches and only ate the filling (meat, cheese, tomato), and a few veggies. I just told people at my table that I couldn't eat wheat. No one seemed to mind and I think people were too upset to worry about what I was eating. In the past I think I would have done what you did and felt bad for a few days, but now I feel that these occasions are always going to come up, and I have to stay strong and not worry that much about what others think of what I eat. When it comes down to it, I have to live with the results of my decisions, not them.

Hope this helps. I understand how frustrating this can be at times.

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I've been back on induction for four days now and the sugar cravings and headaches have finally ended! I haven't lost any weight yet, but I'm stayinig optimistic and am motivated to work hard. ADBB has been such a great resource not only in new information about the diet but being able to share my struggle with all of you!

            Re: Family Funeral Frustration

You should do fine - you're past the hard part. The big spread of food at such gatherings is usually more a social gesture, for appearances, and I should think it completely acceptable to pick at it, select only what you want, or even if necessary just to have a drink in hand. (It would look rude, on the other hand, to focus on only the food served at a reception.)

Sorry for your loss, glad you made it back ok. My Grandmother died recently, and there was a reception after at the retirement home for all who could and couldn't make it to the funeral. The spread was easily 20 feet long, with an open bar on the side.
I made do with S/F soda, ham out of the biscuits, shrimp, olives, baby green salad, and crab-stuffed mushrooms. Most people there ate very little, and talked a lot. There was enough food leftover for several relatives to take home when they left the next day.
