  • Toothache didn't win...

    Yesterday the tooth that has been bothering me for YEARS since a dentist put in a root canal that extended into my bone - started killing me. I have a high pain tolerance but this was over the top, and it turned out this morning that I have another infection, and the dentist says the root canal is now in my sinus cavity. He could not pull it because of that. Yeah, I'll need an oral surgeon, but I'm saving my pennies for that. In the meantime, I'm now on antibiotics to get the infection/pain down.

    That being said, I don't want to be munching meats or peanuts or my usual fare. So the little carb-monster that lives in my head and talks to me incessantly came up with a GREAT IDEA. Why don't I take a vacation from this WOE to eat some soft foods like oatmeal or bread or ice cream..... DO YOU SEE WHAT I HAVE TO DEAL WITH? Do carb-monsters live in YOUR head? It was maddening!!!! Especially going to the pharmacy in the GROCERY STORE where the carb-monster helpfully pointed out the carbalicious dips, soups, even suggested MILK which would be oh-so-easy to swallow and I could get protein that way.

    Well, I got out of there with nothing worse than a container of Splenda-sweetened yogurt (Publix brand, 19 g net carbs) and some Dreamfields pasta which has pushed me out of ketosis in the past. Maybe with some ground meat it won't do that....

    Anyone have any better suggestions while I'm in agony? I won't take the Lortab he prescribed, so ibuprofen will have to work. Which it's doing a sorry job of. Ouch.

    I make all sorts of soups. Eggs would go down easy.

      Here is an Egg Drop Soup receipe I have used, I think I copied it from here on the ADBB ...

      Egg Drop Soup

      You can omit the cornstarch all together or use Xanthan gum for
      thickening.

      * 4 cups chicken broth, divided
      * 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
      * 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
      * 1/4 teaspoon salt
      * 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
      * 2 eggs
      * 1 egg yolk

      DIRECTIONS:

      1. Reserve 3/4 cup of chicken broth, and pour the rest into a large
      saucepan. Stir the salt, ginger and chives into the saucepan, and
      bring to a rolling boil. In a cup or small bowl, stir together the
      remaining broth and cornstarch until smooth. Set aside.
      2. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs and egg yolk together using a
      fork. Drizzle egg a little at a time from the fork into the boiling
      broth mixture. Egg should cook immediately. Once the eggs have been
      dropped, stir in the cornstarch mixture gradually until the soup is
      the desired consistency

      I use ThickenThin to thicken the soup. I will also add a bit of sesame oil, cooked chicken, vinegar and hot pepper flakes to make it more of a hot and sour soup. I usually use canned broth.

          EW, I hate eggs but I had one this morning. I did copy the soup recipe, thanks! Why didn't I think of tuna? W lots of mayo....

          Thanks for the help! I'm also scouting the boards for a shortcake recipe. We had a bunch of strawberries in the garden and that sounded good... The last batch became ice cream but maybe all that fat was the reason for the extra pounds....
