I'm not sure what causes it, but I was drinking diet tonic water...which if anyone has tried it, it is anything but sweet, and it majorly made me hold water and gain. I stopped drinking it two days ago, and MAJOR WHOOSHIE! I wonder if its the quinine in it, as the sodium was low. Who knows, but I won't be drinking it anytime soon.

Re: Diet Tonic Water Warning
I drink it all the time and have no issue with it. Maybe it was the sweetener itself? Or maybe you are right..perhaps you took a reaction to quinine. Did you ever drink regular tonic in the past and have the same issue?
I just looked it up on Wikipedia to see if bloating could be a side effect of if, they don't mention it.
Interesting that it is used as a nocturnal leg cramp remedy (though not in tonic water strength), and for cutting heroin with? LOL
Quinine, is a natural white crystalline alkaloid having antipyretic, anti-malarial with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties and a bitter taste. It is a stereoisomer of quinidine.
Quinine was previously superseded by chloroquine, but is now again the drug of choice for treatment of falciparum malaria because of the rise of chloroquine resistance. Quinine is not readily available in the U.S., although it can be requested from the CDC. Quinine is also used to treat nocturnal leg cramps and arthritis and it has also been used (with limited success) to treat people who had been infected by prions. It was once a popular heroin adulterant.

Re: Diet Tonic Water Warning
Maybe it was something else I was doing at the same time. I did try regular tonic, but it was too close to trying the diet stuff to know if it was the quinine. But that was interesting to know...I knew about the leg cramps, but not the heroine. (But now I have to find out what "Prions" are. The curious mind at work.) Maybe in the future I will try it again, because it is very refreshing, and a gin and diet tonic is a nice treat once in a while. Thanks.

Re: Diet Tonic Water Warning
Just in case anyone else needed to know!prion (pronounced 'pree-on') — short for proteinaceous infectious particle — is a unique type of infectious agent, as it is made only of protein. Prions are abnormally-structured forms of a host protein, which are able to convert normal molecules of the protein into the abnormal structure. Though the exact mechanisms of their actions and propagation are unknown, it is now commonly accepted that prions are responsible for a number of previously known but little-understood diseases classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). These include scrapie (a disease of sheep), Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or mad cow disease).[1] These diseases affect the structure of brain tissue and all are fatal and untreatable.
Proteins showing prion behaviour are also found in some fungi. Some fungal prions may not be associated with any disease state and may have an evolutionary advantage for their hosts. So far all prions discovered are believed to infect and propagate by formation of an amyloid fold. However, since any infectious protein particle would be defined as a prion, other mechanisms may be possible.
