Hello! I am back on Atkins after about a 2 year slide. The first time I went from 220 to 190 in about 3 months. This time I have a bit more work to do - starting at 240 (oops). Anyway, I started induction on Tuesday, but found out (from this forum) that using the shakes and bars are not a good idea right now. So as of today I am back to a clean induction - meat and cheese joy ;-) I have started the ketostix and they have already turned dark on me - I am very suprised that they went dark that fast even though I am not showing weight loos yet, but I have been very careful with my carbs since Tuesday. Has anyone else in the STAC seen this? Such a fast ketosis phase? Just wondering...

I actually haven't used ketostix, but I'm thinking about purchasing some. i actually had a question about your comment-- shakes and bars aren't ok? even the AA ones that say they're safe during induction? :/stephballerina...you must have seen herdancing in the sand

Re: Keto fast?
The body generally only stores enough glycogen in the liver to last a full day without food. Usually on the 2nd day you run out of these reserve carbs, and you go into ketosis. (It could happen faster or slower based on physical activity or metabolic disturbances).
With induction the change will be slower based on how much carb and protein you eat, because the body will use that and reserve glycogen is depleted more slowly, but still usually takes place within a week so long as you're under 20g carbs and not eating tons of meat. I'm a day 3 changer.~Susan

Re: Keto fast?
Let me tell you a little story.
I started this WOL in January. I lost 70 lbs eating fresh meats and produce....quit smoking and had a bar for the FIRST time, had the low carb ice cream for the first time, had 2 slices of the low carb bread...all of this was on different days...not even having it all in the same day. Used it as a "crutch" for the nicotine withdrawal and the cravings it caused.
Got on the scale ... gained 8 lbs in the week!
Not only that, the cravings they caused were horrendous! I've been actually in tears one day because of the cravings. I know part of it is quitting the smoking...but 2 days of no bars/shakes/low carb products and I'm doing just fine again.
If you want this...REALLY want this....stay away from that stuff. You don't need it...most of it tastes like crap anyway. You'll do yourself a much better service to eat fresh meats, VEGETABLES, cheeses during inductions than to fall victim to those shakes/bars/low carb products...non-affectionately called "FRANKENFOOD" around here. You want to lighten yourself of the FAT not the money in your wallet right???
You're going to have a couple days of craving carbs....don't torture yourself by using these products. Just starve the sweet tooth and then start enjoying life free from the sugar beast.~Joy

Re: Keto fast?
I'm tellin' ya, i used to rely on the *frankenfoods* too... didn't want to listen that they weren't appropriate for induction. Joy is right - they DO cause cravings... i was living off of the shakes, bars & sweets, even though they claim to be low in carb, they definitely stalled me, and eventually lead me down the road to cheating. That and diet coke was not helping either! This time i have ditched it all... we'll see how it goes! I am just finishing up week three on Monday...

Re: Keto fast?
Valid is right - I was in ketosis and then added bars and Crystal Light. All of the sudden, no more ketosis. After eliminating ALOT of other things I finally dropped the crystal light and bars and guess what? Ketosis again. Now I drink only plain water and stay away from the bars. If you want a snack, try the mock danish or some sugar free jello. Good luck.Starting Over!

Re: Keto fast?
Well over a year ago, I was on plan and doing great, and then I bought some bars, and that was all she wrote. I ended up going off plan because of the cravings and the fact that eating the bars put me out of ketosis. I will not touch them again. They are very dangerous to a successful low carb plan, especially in the beginning.
I am not against the shakes after induction if they are used very carefully and only occasionally they seem less dangerous than the bars and have never caused me any problems when I have used them occasionally in the past .But I do believe personally that it is better to stay away from all of it completely if you want to stay on plan and be successful. If you do not start you will not miss the stuff.
Pure meats, veggies, salads, eggs and cheese is the best way to go. You can over do on anything, but less likely on those kinds of foods.
Good luck to you !!!

Re: Keto fast?
EEk! I had an Atkins "induction friendly" bar yesterday. I guess I won't be doing that again! It wasn't very good anyway. Kinda like chocolate flavored sawdust.F/40

Back to sensible eating again after a long time.

Re: Keto fast?
Yes, I agree, stay away from the bars. Check out the carb count on them. So totally NOT worth it. Also, I am a day three ketosis girl, too. Sometimes, though, when I get kicked out of ketosis, I can't guess why!149.8/no weigh/ 119
