  • 750 Pound Man - TLC

We watched this last night on TLC. I wish they would have focused more on WHY he had such massive weight gain, but we enjoyed it. It was sad to know he passed away.. and away from his family. How sad. How hard for them.

Watching him struggle, and the others they showed, made me realize that I really do have to take care of myself or I could easily end up like that. What drives us to eat? Must be some pretty powerful feelings. Why can some people swing directions with those feelings and never turn to food and yet others go back again and again to the wrong foods? Is it something we learned as children? Can those feelings be replaced with healthy ways to handle them?

Slowly I'm learning to pay attention to see what types of feelings trigger emotional eating for me and I'm trying to replace the eating with actually feelign the emotion. It can be rough sometimes. But it's a war I want to win. If that drive to emotional eat is that strong that it can force me to eat, I want that same strength to help me with a successful weight loss. Harness that power!

I was amazed to realize what an emotional eater I was. I never would have pegged myself as a stress triggered eater. When I first started Atkins I really saw how frustration and stress just sent me running to any chocolate in the house. I had never noticed that in myself. I thought it was what women on TV did . It was very enlightening for me. I saw this show awhile ago. It was sad. When people get this big there lives can be so limited. It does make you want to seize control!

Good questions! I guess on my end, I would say I definitely learned most of my poor habits at home. Pop was a big thing in the house, though my mom tried to limit it. Then my mom would make dinner - afterwards my dad would order a pizza. He has such an active job it never bothered his weight, but those of us who were eating it with him were in trouble. So yeah, home contributed to my poor habits.
