  • Second Time Plateau

    Hi everyone,

I am also on my second time with Atkins. The first time was in 2002, I went from about 242 to about 210 and couldn't lose anymore. I hit a plateau for months and stopped doing Atkins and resumed eating carbs, only to gain 82 lbs. I was then, 292 and have been on Atkins for about 2.5 weeks and have lost about 14 lbs and am at 278. I am concerned about the same thing happening...losing about 30 lbs and not being able to lose anymore. Or maybe I'll get back down to that 210 and not be able to lose more? Did this happen to anyone else? Any comments/suggestions?

    Hi Melissa ~

Welcome to STAC! Plateaus happen to lots of people, and sometimes if you switch up your routine (exercise, for example) you can break out of it. Other times, you just have to resolve to not get on the scale for a month or two (or more in some cases) and just realize that you are doing this for your health, and it will happen, when your body is ready.

Some talk of "body memory" and how our bodies stay at the same weight that you've been at for a long time in the past. I am at that weight right now myself. I stayed here in the low 230s for 6 months last year. So i am anxious to see if i will be stalled her for awhile or if i'll be able to break through. I have changed things up a bit ~ i exercise more & i've moved onto OWL, whereas in the past i stayed on extended induction too long (for me) and only exercised 3 days a week. So we'll see...

I know it's hard, but try looking at it as overall health changes, and the weight loss will follow as an added benefit! You WILL get there!!!

Was it a true plateau or the scale didn't move. My scale stales... but the inches move and then the scale catches up.

I absolutely agree with Jenna and Rachel. I totally believe the "body memory" thing. I also think that if you are doing induction and hit a plateau for months as said in your post, it would definitely be time to move on to OWL and add more carbs into your day, as well as more of a variety. Exercise is definitely a key too. Are you exercising? Are you drinking lots of water? And finally, if you do hit a plateau, make sure you go over your menu to determine if you have allowed the carbs to slowly creep up.

Great job on your loss so far!!!! You are going to do awesome .

            Re: Second Time Plateau

there are many reasons for true stalls everything from medical issues to over eating your Atkins. as we get smaller we need less food to do the exact same things so we either stall out our weight loss, increase our active life style as Dr Atkins calls it or we eat less. Many supoer heavyweights miss that on the way down when there stall hits.

You are going to see lots of scale number stalls during your journey I had 6 big ones the longest lasting 13 weeks 6 days of no inches nore pounds. ( remember a stall is defined as 4 weeks of no scale nor inches lost). You just need to examine your eating and look for foods that don't agree with our metabolism, medical reasons like low thyroid, changes in your active lifestyle and many other things Dr Atkins discusses in chapter 15 and 20 of DANDR. just know they will get solved and you will get to 100erland one day.
