  • Do you have temptations at work?

I work for a non-profit agency, and although our salaries may be less than they are at for-profit companies, I doubt that many of them could compete when it comes to the amount of free "goodies" that are always available.

In our staff room there is a permanent offering of various chips, cookies, candies, and nuts. Fortunately, they're not just sitting out, but are kept in large drawers; so they don't bother me since I don't see them unless I want to (and I don't!).

However, what is annoying is the constant additional goodies that are always showing up. For years, Friday has been donut day. A huge box from Dunkin Donuts is set out for everyone. Additionally, on many other days, there will be coffee cake, pound cake (often with strawberries), pies, cheesecake or brownies.

I just went to the staff room to get a string cheese from the fridge, and there on the counter was a platter with a huge assortment of pastries. There were a variety of donuts, cruellers, croissants, danishes, brioches and eclairs. Let me tell you, those eclairs were almost too much! I grabbed my cheese and almost ran back to my desk!

I worked at the Child Developement Center for several years and if you want to talk about temptations!! lolol

Kids love to celebrate their birthdays with lots of goodies. We had some parents bring pizza...cakes...cookies...ice cream or other goodies. Also, the holidays were bad cause we got gifts from the parents and they'd give us boxes of candy, homemade breads, gift certificates to the bakery...

My boss and I used to joke that Dr. Atkins was in heaven sending these temptations to me to see if I had learned my lesson. Dumb, but sometimes it seemed I was being put to the test.

ON the other hand...my girlfriend -- has been on WW for several months and lost 35 pounds. She is always telling me that the office always has sweets and foods brought in that she can't eat. Well, the other day...they had a meeting and her supervisor said he was noticing how she is trying so hard to lose weight and that he is going to start an incentive for health program for the office. He's allowing 20 minutes a day for walking during work. He is going to have fruits available for them to munch on instead of donuts. He is also going to give a health bonus to the ones who sign up to lose weight and do it. I thought this was pretty decent of him. She said so far her and two guys have signed up and she suspects others in the office will too.

Funny thing with goodies is.. whatever is available will be eaten! It's a nibble factor and not always the what is it factor. A platter of cheese squares and a tray of veggies will disappear too. Maybe not as fast.. but I've seen it happen. In the south, every function revolves around food. They'll eat it no matter what it is!

good for you for avoiding temptation.

Re: Do you have temptations at work?

It's not too difficult for me at work. We have a fridge, microwave, even a chest freezer so it's very easy to keep things on hand that I can have. Even during pitch-in's there are certain things people always bring that are Atkins legal. One of my faves is a cheese spread one lady makes.... it has onion, jalapeno peppers, tomatoes and cream cheese. They all go for it on chips and I'm perfectly happy putting it on celery or cucumber slices.

Our break room is at the opposite end of the floor for me so when I'm back there and see the donuts and things brought in, I just stay on my own end of the floor for a while.

I sure do hate it when they use the toaster though! You can't escape those wonderful smells!

Work is a tough place for me, if I get hungry and don't bring the right stuff.

The kitchen is across from my office door, and today they have donuts and bread pudding on the counter. In the cupboards they have chips, crackers, cookies ETC. The fridge is fairly safe, it has cheese sticks in it. The freezer has assorted ice creams in it...

I just keep my eyes closed ALL THE TIME.

Work isn't too bad for me...except the fact that the water cooler is IN THE KITCHEN! I have to go PAST the table with all the goodies on it (usually not too much) to get my water bottle filled up That's not too bad though, I can handle that.

What's worst for me is going to the grocery store...seriously...when we went shopping last night it was hard to resist the rows and rows of cookies and cakes and breads and everything bad! I never noticed how much of that junk is in stores until last night. I told Richard "that doesn't look good to me though, just looks like 20 pounds to me!"

I work at home, so I"m good The kids have things - icecream, cookies, and sometimes they make brownies. My downfall is chips. I just stay away while they are eating sandwiches and I'm okay. The other stuff doesn't bother me.

I went to the store last night and noticed the two girls in front of me with their parents. The parents were average sized, but both girls already had bellies. Enough to stick out and look like a ball under their shirts. And they were so young. I was watching the mom put the groceries on the conveyor... fat-free cookies and snack cakes, 140 calorie muffins, boxes and boxes of frozen pizzas, icecream, freezer waffles and pancakes, sponge bob something or other in a box, frozen enchaladas. oh.. and a case of diet soda! No real foods. No veggies. No meats.. no cheeses, no milk..

There was a mom and daughter shopping. They were each using the electric chair shopper thingies. I gathered it was because they were too big to walk. Cart filled with junk! The daughter was going on and on about some cotton candy flavored stuff you add to your milk.. and how good it sounded.. and then she asked the mom if SHE wanted some LOL The mom said no, she didn't have any milk. They were older so maybe they don't live together. Then the daughter was mumbling to herself how good it sounded and how she really cannot have that.. and then something about getting some low calorie jelly and then wheeled on past it.

I just felt so sad for them.

I have always liked to watch people at grocery stores too. I KNOW that people used to look at me and what I put on the belt and say "OMG why would she be getting all THAT if she's already fat?!" But it amazes me how other people shop...I have noticed that the larger people are those who have the frozen meals and treats and the people I would much rather look like have a nice healthy array of fruits and veggies along with grains and dairy....it's amazing to me how people can't see what's wrong with that picture!

Took me forever to figure it out too. But I'm changing. Now hubby and I load up on the good stuff and doing lots of organics too. The kids constantly tease me.. but I don't hear them complain about what they are eating LOL And they look good!

Speaking of temptations. I just walked into the kitchen at work to get some water, and there are muffins, donuts, pretzels and chips in there. Glad I have my turkey and cheese roll ups.

Well unfortunately part of my job is to buy and bring the goodies! Every Wednesday I bring in and set up the five dozen donuts, dozen muffins, and dozen bagels, along with the apples, bananas, and oranges (or whatever the produce company decides to bring us). Every month we do a birthday day where I go and buy two half sheet cakes-one chocolate, one white. Also at the end of every month we have a large meeting where I have to provide snacks - and trust me these people are not happy with only fruit and veggie trays! Usually at least twice a month we have clients or other guests come in and I'm asked to provide breakfast food which translates to "Go to Panera Bread and get some good pastries". Also we have two kitchens one upstairs and one downstairs. Good thing on this time around I have been mostly free of cravings. It's just those muffins on Wednesdays! I used to fight with the operations manager over who got the chocolate chip muffin! Now he comes to my desk to eat it and say "mmmmm" at me!

lol you think one day of donuts is bad?
My company has tuesday and thursday mornings as donut/bagel day ever since it started. it feeds 4000 employees every tuesday and thursday bagels, pastries, donuts, cookies etc! THEN in the summer, every wednesday they have huge coolers of DQ ice creams. Thats only the normal company food, thats not even mentioning the stuff people have out constantly just because. The newest thing I saw was katchup flavored potato chips...

I owned a bakery cafe. I also used to own a pizzeria.
Now I'm in a hotel as sous chef. It's my job to taste food all day long.
And then I spit it out because of my diet.

I am not sure who wins. I thought that Thinner wins, but I think that Kevin takes the cake.

We do have goodies at work, but it is only occasionally. My downfall is the lunches at Olive Garden... But, we haven't had one of those in awhile.

What about ketosis? Come on, let's all get into ketosis and then we won't want these things at all. Don't forget how these goodies make us feel. Gross.
