  • Why is it so hard to do?

    Hi everyone

I restarted atkins 2 days ago, today is day 3 and i have failed. I feel so sad that i can't do this. I did atkins before and lost about 30lbs and have put weight back on since then.

I need to lose about 50lbs but i just can't do it, i'm not strong enough to say NO to these BAD FOODS.

Why is it so hard i read post from some of you that have lost so much weight and you must of gone threw **** at the time but you did it, I just can't see that i will ever be an atkins success story.

    Any advice please!

Aww, I am sorry to hear that, I wasnt so sure I would b able to do this either, because usually on day 2 or 3 of other diets I would give up and just say "oh well u failed again"
but I made up my mind of Atkins and if you just push past the cravings then soon it will get easier. I just keep telling myself just to get thru the day then deal with tomorrow tomorrow. My appetite is decreased a great deal after only 5 days on atkins and I just knwo in my heart that I can stick with this, I only want to lose 10 pounds so I know that I will not be saying goodbye to my favorite foods forever. You just got to take things on step at a time, and believe in yourself a little, I believe that you can do this, I know u can, You just have to really put your heart into it, Also what motivated me alittle was shopping for all the approved foods and then googling reciepes that are atkins approved.
Try again, and really dont pressure yourself so hard, just put your mind to it, and U can do it!!!!
    Good luck

Re: Why is it so hard to do?

Hey Mandy. I tried and tried after my first successful loss with atkins and I could not get it together! This time I had support from my husband, found the board, tossed out the bad foods, brought in tons of good ones, journaled online and offline. Induction - eat the allowed foods when you are hungry. Don't let yourself get too hungry. Once you get past that two weeks it gets much easier. Do it for two weeks and then you can allow yourself some freedom with foods after moving up the rungs.

Trust me, I have been where you are. You have to want losing weight MORE than you want the pleasure of eating those bad foods. Only you can decide.

        Mandy,
You do have to want it MORE than...everything else.
It is very hard the first week, but as Rachel said, get legal foods around you and reach for them (Not gorge) over and over until you get into ketosis...make ketosis your first goal...once there your appetite is surpressed, and you start to loose the cravings, and you begin to burn fat...
Most of just have addictions to carbs and we have to treat it as such and be tougher than we have ever been before...Hang out here alot, there is motivation in the people's stories and struggles...Some of the most successful people here will reach out to you, with understanding and often direction, spend time here, keep trying...
as Pstansel says, "then it will click" and then you break thru...

Re: Why is it so hard to do?

Hi Mandy. Instead of telling yourself that you can't do it, tell yourself the reasons that you must do it. Give yourself credit for posting and asking for help. You must commit to changing the bad habits and replacing them with healthy actions. Write out what is happening in your life to jeopardize yourself. Find solutions to those issues and follow through with them.

Write out the acceptable food list, plan ahead for your meals for the first few weeks. Don't allow yourself to feel deprived over certain foods, instead get excited about all the great foods you can eat on Atkins. Find substitute foods to fix meals that you've always enjoyed. example: (I love lasagna. I now eat it with zucchini noodles instead of flour noodles. I didn't have to give it up, just made it fit into my life-style).

You can do this. You just have to want it badly enough to be willing to change the things that are making you miserable. We are all here for you with friendship, support and encouragement!

Re: Why is it so hard to do?

Hi Mandy, I am where you are. My advice is to be prepared with the foods you need, and read the book and this forum daily while you are doing it. Check in daily if just to say hello. Do not be hard on yourself, do not beat yourself up if you make a mistake, and if you do, try, try again. You are in this with all of us, so you are not alone. I've been seriously trying since JAN. 2006, and it finally clicked enough to make it through Induction...hopefully I'm on my way now. I still have issues that I have to accept. PLEASE Don't give up! Hope to see you around.

Re: Why is it so hard to do?

                Mandy,

Well I am feeling you here. It is hard and well I was doing good and then bam yesterday was a bad day for me.

I just gave in. Uggghhh! I am upset with myself because I do want it but
I let these darn carbs get me.

So I have to start up again.

I agree with the advice given here. Throw out the bad foods and stock up on the good ones. It's hard to do when you have a family and they eat carbs.

But I have to be strong and so do you.

So here we go again. Let's not give up on our goals.

I'm a HUGE believer in positive self talk and goal setting.

You know, your subconscious is listening to you talk about all the things you can't do, and the truth is that these things become self fulfilling prophecies. If you believe you aren't strong enough, you're right. You're not. If you can't see success for yourself, you're not going to find it. One of the quotes I have on my site says, "Whether you believe you can or you can't, you'll be right." Here's a whole bunch of stuff to read on that: Random Thoughts.

You can absolutely be successful. You are strong enough to do what needs to be done. You are not helpless. You are, however, making choices that sabotage you. You can change that. You really can.

It's not easy. It is work. It's going to take time and you're going to have to be very purposeful.

(I'm a quote junkie, so forgive me...but..heh heh)...

The only thing I can say is NEVER give up on yourself. Just keep trying and eventually it will "click" for you.
It took me 2 years, yes 2 years, of on and off the wagon, a few days here - even so much as a week on and then falling off again - before it clicked for me and I stayed put.
Believe me you can do it! I know you can!!! Just keep trying.
There is a quote that helps me......I don't know who said it, but it helps, hopefully it will help you too......"I never said it wouldn't be hard. I said it would be worth it"
And it is. Hang in there - we are here for you, we believe in you! You can do it!

The only thing that I don't agree with is the comment that we go through **** to get there. I absolutely agree that the first week is torture. Having said that, it gets so easy once you are in ketosis. The problems lie when you think you are ready to have just a little something something and you knock yourself out of ketosis. If you can avoid that, it is so easy! It is hard to remember to eat because of the lack of appetitie.

Be prepared with the foods. You are so worth it!

what the rungs mean to me:
                      rung 1 - more veggies
rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                      rung 4 - berries, melon
                      rung 5 - wine -
                      rung 6 - beans, hummus
                      rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
                      Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
