  • Hair Loss

    Good morning,
    I know that I saw a thread on here recently about hair loss, but I can't find it. I didn't pay too much attention then because I have never had that problem. However, my Mom has been doing Atkins for about Eight Months now and has developed a real problem. Her hair is coming out in clumps and she nows has a couple of balding areas.

    I am going to go look for something in the book on this topic, but anything information that you all have would be great appreciated.

    1st goal: 139 (earlier weight)
    what the rungs mean to me:
    rung 1 - more veggies
    rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
    rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
    rung 4 - berries, melon
    rung 5 - wine -
    rung 6 - beans, hummus
    rung 7 - other fruits
    rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
    rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
    Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
    (on to pre-maintenance)

    I do know that having too little fat will cause your hair to fall out. Atkins alone should not make it fall out in clumps. I forget the vitamin for hair and nails.. B? make sure she is getting enough.

      Thanks for the information. We will try the B and up the fat. She really likes the diet and she has lost 35 pounds!

            hair loss is actually quite common on atkins, tell her not to worry. It seems that it goes away after a few months. Mine falls out every time I do atkins, or even anything relatively low carb. It's really annoying, let me tell you! But, it grows back, so all is not lost. Bald patches seem scary though!!

              Thanks so much for the information. I did figure out how to search, too. Thanks, Terry for that. Now, I am finding all sorts of stuff.

              Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am sure that it is distressing when hair loss occurs.
