  • Second try a S-L-O-W fight

I've been browsing the forum and I thought I'd join. I'm having a heck of a time this second time around - I think I may have missed my 'Golden Shot'

Background: In May of 2003, after a particularly hideous week of travel that included meetings with Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Ghirardelli Brownies I was stuck in Dulles Airport trying to get back to Minneapolis. After a cancelled flight I had 4 hours to kill and saw DANDR in the bookstore and picked it up. I started the diet the next day.

At 38 years old, 5’11 and 235lbs, I was in bad shape. I immediately lost a lot of weight and by mid-December (6 months later) I was at 183lbs. I kept it off for just over a year but those baked goods called to me. (They don’t call it Devil’s food cake for nothing.)

Today: I’m now at my old weight again and am determined to make a change. But after 2 weeks of eating no carb meals (pepperoni, tuna, bunless burgers) I have not lost any weight. ZERO! Last time I had lost 10 ponds in the first two weeks.

I’m doing multi-vitamins, l-carnitine, CLA, and Magnesium/Potasium and Calcium. I’m also trying to get in some exercise (last time around I did NO exercise and NO supplements) but it’s not kicking me into ketosis.

I’ll keep going another two weeks and perhaps drop the CLA and l-carnitine if I nothing changes. I’ll also keep reading the forums – great to know there are others who are making it and I can draw some inspiration from you.

    Thanks for listening.

Hi Kevin. Welcome to the ADBB. Just hang in there - you might be losing inches. Have you measured yourself?

Glad ya joined us! Maybe I not understanding your post. You are eating no carbs? No veggies? No fats? You gotta have carbs - good carbs. Twenty a day if you are doing Induction. Don't give up! You know it works. Stick around the boards, reread the book and drink the water. Oh, and eat your veggies

          Hi Kevin, and welcome!

It can be slower the second time around, yes. I think there's a sticky in the forum somewhere to that effect.

Maybe you could post your menu for us so we could eyeball it and see if anything seems like an obvious culprit. For example, if you're eating those atkins diet bars/shakes, those can cause stalling.

The other thing is that if you are exercising this time around and you didn't last time around, you might be building muscle at the same time that you are losing fat. The net result of this is that you might not lose as much weight but you will be getting skinnier nonetheless. Measure yourself and see if you have progress that way. Are your clothes looser? That's an easy way to tell. That's been happening to me this time around - my pants are practically hanging off of me and the scale tells me I'm the same weight. Hmph! :P

But, never fear, you'll get there. We'll help you figure it out!

Re: Second try a S-L-O-W fight

Thanks for your responses. I've been reading a bit more and have a few changes to make but there is good news... I got some Ketosis strips today and ran a test and it showed I'm in Ketosis (between moderate and large). That's encouraging.
My meals today included Bacon/Eggs on the morning (every morning)

Lunch: Applebee's house sirloin w/ broccoli and house saled (sans croutons and carrots) with Blue Cheese dressing. ('m a Salesguy who travels alot and eats out 10+times/week)

Dinner: Salad w/ Blue Cheese and roasted Chicken.
But.... I also had 2 diet Cokes. I now remember the cafeine is a no-no so I'll reluctantly lay off of those for a while.

Thanks again and I'll keep plugging. I'd love to make it happen to show the 'Golden Shot' thing is just a myth.

Don't worry Kevin it'll come! Just don't get down on yourself! I'm pretty impatient when it comes to losing weight and I notice with impatience comes temptation. I get so ready to just quit because it's not coming off fast enough but I hang in there. You do the same and those pounds and inches will be melting away before you know it Good luck to you!

Re: Second try a S-L-O-W fight

welcome to ADBB and back to Atkins. check your resturant foods for some hidden carbs there. most chickens are injected with a salt sugar solution to make them taste better and be moister. McDonlads website says it's griiled chicken breast has 5 carbs in it. and that is just the chicken no sauce or veggies.

Try to consume some of your veggies with your breakfast. it might seem trivial now but as you add back foods in OWl you want your fuel intake to be consistant and having no carbs for breakfast will then cause you tio have a blood sugar swing at your next carb intake. think of yourself as a car running on super you can fuel with regular now and then when you run dry add a tank of premium and average the too. you were too lean and then too rich. make things easy for yourself and always have some protein some healthy fat and some of your carbs at every meal and snack.

                happy low carbing

Re: Second try a S-L-O-W fight

I think that eating out a lot is harder than cooking for oneself. You might want to try cutting down on portions a bit, especially when traveling, its a lot of sitting. Put the extra in a doggy bag and if you get hungry you can eat it but toss it once its time for another meal. Also restaurants do weird things to food. Once I thought I was being so good by ordering an IHOP omelet only to come to this board and find out they put pancake mix in the omelet batter. Is that crazy. So you have to be extra careful and ask lots of questions and not to trusting of the answers.
Its easy to get frustrated, but you know itw orks, it worked in the past and it will start working for you again.

I saw a post somwhere on this board about Applbee's injecting a sugar solution into their steaks... someone was not losing weight and started to ask questions... you really want to make sure and ask about sugar even with items you may think don't have it...like some Outbacks put a sugar seasoning on their steamed veggies...go figure...it is always good to let your server know that you cannot have sugar of any type and they should be able to help you out... Welcome Kevin! Hang in there and be strong! Like the rest of the crew said ASK ASK ASK! I was at a festival this weekend and was going to get a steak kabob. Harmless right? I asked if they used any type of sugar in the seasoning. They said they MARINATED it in a sugar seasoning! Always ASK!! (by the way I didn't eat the kabob!) The only other advice I can try to help you with is your veggie intake. It looks like you had broccoli and 2 salads for your meal that you posted. Be sure you only have 3 cups! So, again, welcome aboard STAC and have a great week!

this is my second time thru as well, and am stuck, haven't lost any pounds at all, it is now a month.. no inches have come off either... clothes fit the same.. I am a horse trainer so I get lots of exercise.. have been in induction for a month now... my usual breakfast is 2 eggs and 1 oz sausage and sugar free, caffine free tea and I have 16 oz of water b4 I have breakfast and then the rest of the needed water during the day. I am getting discouraged... for lunch I usually will have salad, lettuce with tuna and mayo with some celery. dinner is meat and veggie, broccoli most of the time. sugar free things... HELP!
