  • 1 week -- checkin' in

Just wanted to pop my head in and check in to say that I've completed my first week. I'm not really weighing -- because I am in this for the long haul. My mini goal is to be a good girl until Thanksgiving -- at which time I will have some legal goodies.

I'm doing a modified induction (basically, added raw almonds, black soy beans) because I've found that this slight increase keeps several annoying side affects at bay: migraines and leg cramps.

    So far, my menu is:
    Breakfast:
    1/4 c raw almonds
    1 oz. cheese slice
    coffee with cream and spenda

    Lunch:
2 c lettuce salad with various legal veggies
2TB low carb dressing of choice

    Dinner:
1 c spag. squash with garlic, butter, and parmesan cheese, chicken breast

OK, so I'm not drinking all of the water I should be, but I'm going to work on that!

I promised myself I'd never see 200 on the scale again!

    Hi!

Make sure you drink your water! At least 64oz. a day is neccessary. Are you counting carbs? How many are you consuming per day?

Since you've cut down carbs, you might want to consider induction. True, you might still get induction flu, but it won't be nearly as bad as if you'd quit carbs cold turkey. Induction will put you into lipolysis/ketosis, and switch you to fat-burning rather than glucose-burning.

Even if you don't do induction, you could follow the rungs, starting with veggies, then dairy, then nuts, etc. Also, it's a good idea to eat protien, fat, and carbs with every meal--this prevents blood sugar spikes.

    Hope this helps!

Hey Urban, FANTASTIC you have one week under your belt. I know you are feeling better, huh? I think it's such a huge accomplishment in the very beginning to see that first week pass. Hey since you mentioned "LONG HAUL" have you been able to get into the book, and really begin to absorb all that Dr A says about the "long haul"...He is brilliant and this program is specifically staged and geared, step by step for that long haul you are sooo desiring. If you don't have a copy, now with all the motivation and committment you have going for you, you should get going in the book...I know having the understanding and going after a new principal, or activity each week, keeps me moving forward... Because it's for the LONG HAUL, most all of us have many adjustments we have to keep making...that book is priceless in guiding us to ketosis, clean inductions, explaining insulin, showing us the way along this journey.

        YOU ARE doing AMAZING!!!!!

Thanks, everyone. I had such an easy first week, I may ease down the carbs even more -- which I've already started to do. I think cutting back carbs and going into induction (though I refuse to give up my almonds!) has less physical side affects on my than slamming right into it as I usually do. I don't think there's any harm in cutting down (I've had no sugar, no flour products, only legal veggies, dairy, lean meats, etc...). I've just found that if I can hold back the really bad effects (ie, headaches and dibilitating leg cramps) then I can stay committed. My weightloss may not be as fast, and no, I'm not strictly counting carbs, but I have an idea of where they are at from years of this way of eating. Thanks everyone -- and yes, I've read and re-read the book a dozen or more times, and carry it with me to work every day! I've worked the rungs in the past, and discovered that nuts don't adversely affect my weightloss, so I add them at the beginning now -- because they really help me in so many other ways.

Evening, Val!! (Nice to know your name... )

I'm glad you're back and posting with us and sharing your journey.

              Whatcha' fixin' for supper?

I baked some chicken (w/salt, pepper, garlic/onion powder) and then at the end topped it with a cooked piece of bacon and a slice of provolone cheese. Yum! I'm eating it now (chewing while I type). Also some leftover veggies and fresh squash.

Hope you have a nice night!

My girlfriend had horrible leg cramps until I introduced her to calcium pills and within a couple days they were gone. Also potassium helps also. Almonds are very healthy and I zipped up to the nut rung as fast as I could, so I understand why you don't want to give them up.

I always have nuts in the beginning too, as they don't affect my weight loss. I know that I lose faster if I do strict strict induction for a while, but honestly I'm not worried about speed so much as I am about the long haul. So, there you have it. :P

I noticed you don't have any meat at lunch or breakfast. how do you function on so little calories? i'd be dying! :P

                      Hey knicknack,
For breakfast, I usually don't have meat, but almonds are incredibly high in calories. 1/4 cup has about 250 calories -- thats about a handful. Add a 50 cal. slice of cheese and another 50 or so for the cream in my coffee, and you've got a 350 calorie breakfast -- which tides me over until past noon usually. If I do get the urge to snack, I'll eat a string cheese stick.
For lunch I usually put some chicken breast or tuna into my salad. I'd never make it on a plain lettuce salad!

As you said, speed isn't as important to me as my overall health and commitment to the long haul. Glad to know you're on the journey with me!

                        Hey Kat,
I made a bacon cheeseburger quiche from a recipe I snagged somewhere last year. Basically, it has a ground beef "crust" and lots of yummy cheese, eggs and bacon. yummmmm. For now I'm trying to make things that will last me through the week because it's often been my downfall to be ravenously hungry when I get home from work and not wanting to cook. Having something easy to reheat helps a lot. That squash sounds so good, I think I'll bake some this weekend.

I love it when I have leftovers to use the next day!! It sure makes it a lot easier.

Your quiche sounds very good! Is that a recipe from ADBB? Having leftovers is important for me too. I wish I could be "Miss Prepared" all the time, that would save me from making big mistakes. Ugh..and how!
