  • Preparing for Tgiving

A lot of people will use the weekend to gather foods or plan the menu for Tgiving to avoid a last minute rush. So I thought it would help if we posted what our plans are for food. I always enjoying hearing what others have

    Tgiving Meal:

    Smoked Turkey
    Cranberry sauce
    Okra dressing
    Stove top dressing
    Salad
    Deviled eggs
Green Beans with bacon and onions
    Rolls
    Revolution rolls
    Diet Root beer
    Coke
    Tea

I bought 2 freezer pies to bake instead of making from scratch so I'm not too tempted and it saves me time LOL I'm wanting to make the pumpkin cheesecake or the pumpkin and cream cheese mixture. Need to find that recipe! I was the only one who ate the yams so I'm not making them. If they want them, they can eat them at my inlaws and I can avoid them. I'm taking okra dressing, green beans and drinks to the inlaws. Making sure I'm taking foods legal for me

    Re: Preparing for Tgiving

Well it's just the bf and I so I'm going to be very careful about only cooking small batches of things...

Roast Turkey Breast (not buying the whole darn thing...just the boob, please!)
    Green beans
Mashed turnips for me, Mashed redskins for bf
    Relish tray
Whole grain Italian Herb bread for bf (it's healthy--I make it with wheat flour, wheat bran, and flax meal!)
    Cheesecake or Pumpkin Pie

Pretty simple menu...I am a bit bummed I'm not on the berries rung (cranberry sauce) or alcohol rung (wine with dinner) yet...but I will be for Christmas!

I don't care about anything else, but I'm making George Stella's New York Ricotta Cheesecake. Nummy Nummy Nummy

I can always find stuff to eat at most any thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, beans, salad. Yummy.

        Re: Preparing for Tgiving

Since I'm a Sista'girl (we all are sista'girls, but I'm a Sista'girl!) with extended family of southern roots, my thanksgiving will go a little somethin' like this.
        Dinner
        Deep fried turkey
Baked Turkey (yeah, we cook 2 of them)
        Ham
candied yams (loaded with butter, sugar, cinammon and nutmeg)
        collard greens w/ smoked turkey
        Black-eyed peas w/ smoked turkey
        corn
        sweet peas
        cornbread dressing
        mashed potatoes and gravy
        Mac Cheese
snap beans w/ smoked turkey (fresh green beans)
        cornbread
        Fresh, homemade potato dinner rolls
canned cranberry sauce (go with the can...keep it simple you know!)
        Dessert
        sweet potato pie
        lemon cheese cake
        pound cake
        7-up cake
        upside down pineapple cake
        fried peach pies
        chocolate chip cookies

So as you can see.....I'm in deep trouble! I'm already trying to finagle my way out of going to my families house for dinner. I don't think I am strong enough. I am seriously thinking to say that I am sick and have my husband bring me a plate of legal food back!

Wow~! That's quite the menu, Stretchin! Sounds like it could feed an army! You could take all of us with you (in spirit) and we could be your support system!

            Re: Preparing for Tgiving

You should see the kitchen table every year. Half of the time the food doesn't fit on one plate. It is rediculous how we center our holidays and special events around food. It makes it hard to enjoy family and try to eat resonably! Better off not going!
Actually, I may go and have my husband cut me an eye if he sees me near something that I shouldn't have. Otherwise, as ValidRouge said, there is actually a lot of things that I can have on the menu (veggies, turkey, etc...).

Thanks for the support...I think we all are going to need it during these food-focused holidays!

wow! How many people go to that feast??? My family tends to center around the food. Hubby's family tends to center around the event. His family is a lot of thin people.. hmm.. mine is not LOL I'm trying to turn my focus more to the event and eat the legal yummy foods

Aw man...now I wanna go to Stretchin's Thanksgiving and not mine!

Aren't those deep fried turkeys dangerous? I thought I read something like 10 or more people die each year related to those things during the cooking process. I've been dying to try it though!

Just eat all you can in veggies and meat first...then you'll be so stuffed you can't try anything else...

                    Re: Preparing for Tgiving

Have gathered these low carb recipes that would make a totally low carb dinner for the holiday's.

Roasted or fried turkey whichever you like best
                    Broccoli slaw
                    pork rind stuffing
                    cranberry sauce a la magic
                    faux sweet potato casserole
mashed fauxtatoes or twice baked fauxtatoes
low carb pumpkin pie with pecan crust
rich and creamy low carb cheese cake

Be happy to share the recipes if anyone is interested.

                        Re: Preparing for Tgiving

Higgies you just can't put a 20 pound turkey in a fryer that is designed for only a 10 pound turkey. If you read the directions and follow them you do fine and they come out great. We have made fried turkey several times and yeah the first time we made the mistake of the turkey being too big and had a small fire from the oil spilling over when we put the turkey in too fast. LOL But we didn't burn anything down or kill anybody.

                            Re: Preparing for Tgiving

That's got to be it (fires/burns), I can't imagine the turkey itself being that dangerous!

You know, for that amount of food, you'd think we were feeding millions of folks! Truth is, it is only a few of us. Both sides of the family cooks this way (and we are ALL fat!) and my husband and I each only have 2 siblings, our parents and a few nieces and nephews. And we don't even combine the family......this amount of food is for just my side of the family. A few extended family and friends may stop by, but the food is embarassingly just for us 5-6 folks!
We eat all day and then the rest of the food is primarily for leftovers....we eat Thanksgiving food for DAYS after the actual holiday! Just something we do every year. (no wonder we gain steadily!!)

                            Everyone's invited....
