NEWBIES: It can be done! Many of us can remember our first day here, our first week getting through induction flu and pressing towards that unbelieveable thought: "I've made it a week"...

For those on the outside looking in, wondering about doing this...do it. In one week you will go from feeling terrible to incredible. After detoxing and ridding yourself of the sugars, you will begin to gain energy and a sense of life and HOPE! In one week, you will rid your body of carbs and burning them for fuel to switching to burning your own fat for fuel, that's called ketosis. Once there your appetite will significantly diminish and your cravings will physically have lessed...mentally you will still "feel and want" certain trigger or comfort foods, but the renewed sense of hope and energy will hopefully cause you to press on.

Drinking the water is a challenge for more people and you will find many will agree with you, but it truly truly adds to your sense of fullness and it will distract you as you run to the bathroom. I cluctched a water bottle for the longest time...I rarely go anywhere without a water bottle now.

Exercise will give you immediate feedback bout a half hour AFTER you do it, there will be a sense of well being and pride! You might be very tired, or sweaty or find it painful, but endorphines will be released into your system and you will also feel good about having done it. Dr. A says, "exercise is nonegotiable".

DANDR is the book: Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution...Read it, don't go to the induction chapter, read the first 10 ch. you will learn why this is such a specific diet, and why you can't cheat, and what happens metabolically if you do.

Stay away from the scales after the inital weigh in. Don't play with them, they can discourage you. Make sure you do take your measurements, because you will loose more inches than pounds as your body gets into this. Fat takes up more space than muscle. If you exercise you will build lean muscle. Muscle burns calories, fat sits there...
Scales don't tell the whole story!!!!

My name is jess, I'm starting my 6th month in Jan. I've lost 50lbs. I have not cheated, I have come here and made friends, I have learned so much more, and I give to others. I have EARNED my self control and self respect again. I have worked to a level of fitness that I am proud of. It can be done. If I can overcome myself and my addictions, with hard work and intense focus you can too!

Great words of encouragement, Jess. I expect that we will have a lot of newbies and visitors this week and next week. Your words will certainly help them.

As for me, I'm doing really well. I thought I was coming down with a cold, but it doesn't seem to be catching on, which is great. I'm on track and feeling great.

I'm leaving for a camping trip tomorrow (Friday), so you won't be hearing from me until Tuesday night or Wednesday.

        Take care everybody...

Re: 12/28 Newbies: It can be done!

                  Hello all,
Just wanted to update, I finished my 9th day of induction and I feel pretty terrific, and i honestly attribute that to all of the water I have been drinking and my drastic cut in coffee/diet soda (limit of 2 cups of coffee a day from at least 6 and 1 can of diet soda a day from at least 2-3) I'm drinking roughly 3 liters of water daily. Also, my offical food cut off time is 6:30 pm, no matter HOW HUNGRY I GET, which doesnt happen too often lately. I am offically against weighing myself especially so early on, but my clothes feel better and more importantly, I feel like im shrinking..thats my fool proof way of knowing everytime. I'm thinking its atleast 5 lbs, plus im a little bloated from..perfect timing right? Anyway just wanted to share and hopefully be someones motivation, just as so many of you are my daily fix as well . Good Luck all and I'm so happy that New Years is coming and I am already ahead of the game! Thanks again for all of the advice and Happy New Year!

Congratulations on drinking your water as well as cutting down on your caffeine intake

I noticed you mention limiting how late you eat food no matter how hungry you are. While many people do feel they shouldnt eat late in the day, this is not an Atkins rule - in fact we are told to eat if we feel hungry.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                      Jess,

I wouldn't say I'm a newbie to this WOL but I am "new again". I just started back after 2 years and your post was a wonderful reminder and great encouragement.

REALLY GREAT POST! THANK YOU FOR TAKING THE TIME AND THOUGHT TO WRITE IT FOR THOSE OF US WHO REALLY NEED IT!!

Thanks for the great post! I did Atkins a few years ago and was very successful but have reverted back to my old ways...and all my weight came back on. I am starting my first day of induction today (what better way to start off a new year) and look forward to the great results. I am so glad I finally found a supportive group of people who will keep me encouraged.

I'm guilty of the scale obsession myself. This is the first time I've ever really tried to diet, so seeing the pounds come off is really a new experience for me. Maybe I need to put the scale in the freezing cold garage so I'll be less tempted.

Thank you for the words of wisdom Jess!
