  • Here I go again !!!

    Hi All !

Well, here I go again. I joined the ADDB with good intentions back in November. Unfortunately I got caught up in the holiday craziness and didn’t start the diet. Now it’s 2007 and I mean business. There’s so many people here I’m sure you don’t remember my introductory post. If you’re interested you can read it here….

    http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=37878

To make a long story short, I was on the original version of the diet years ago and did very well. Then I gained it all back (26 lbs.). A few years later I did the newer version (net carbs) and didn’t do so well. In Oct. 2006 I tried again using the original diet again but wasn’t losing as much as I originally was and felt fatigued.

So here I go again. Thanks to the encouragement you all gave me back in November I’m sticking to it no matter what. 30 lbs is my goal. I started today.

Can I get a little help???

1.) Since I had better luck just counting carbs instead of net-carbs should I stick with that? Or should I get the newer book. I can only find the original laying around.

2.) From reading other stories here I see that I should cut out the coffee ( oh no), drink plenty of bottled water and exercise. Anything else that may not be obvious? My personal belief is the Atkins bars aren’t good. They were the main source of net-carbs I ate when I did the newer version of the diet which didn’t work so well. Opinions about that anyone ??

3.) Vitamins ?? I was using an arsenal of separate pills based on the recommendations Dr. Atkins made in the original book. Is the “Basic-3” still available now that he’s gone? Or some equivalent ?

4.) Now for the most important question. The last time I did the diet I didn’t get the Atkins surge of energy. I felt weak and fatigued. If that happens again, how do I deal with it? I need to keep some stamina up or this is a doomed endeavor.

5.) I’ve seen the term “Clean Induction” used. Can someone point me to a thread that explains that? There’s so much information here which is great but a bit overwhelming.

6.) Is this the right section of the forum to post these questions?

7.) Perhaps the boot camp? I'll read more on that.

I’m sure I’ll have more questions but these will get me started.

In advance,…THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

This appears to be the most supportive discussion board I’ve ever seen.

Re: Here I go again !!!

    Steve, hello again!

You're back with a vengeance and going to bite the bullet and DO IT this time, right? Right! :P

    1. Count net carbs. This means that you take the full count and subtract the fiber. That's all. Definitely do the net thing though because that will keep your carbs close to 20 which will help with your energy issues in #4.
    2. I'd ditch the coffee, the bars, the shakes, the diet soda. Basically do a "clean" induction (explained later). Avoid caffeine--it gives you the munchies, avoid the shakes and bars because they have sugar alcohols which can give you the munchies, and the diet sodas usually have aspartame, which....guess what?....can give you the munchies. It's hard enough going through the detox without putting yourself through a vicious cycle and prolonging things with these products. That's my two-cents version.
    3. Vitamins--get Centrum Silver with no iron, and a good Fish/flax seed oil supplement (capsules). There are others you can get, but those two are the basic.
    4. After the detox you will get the energy. Give it time. It might take a couple days, it might take a week. If you do the plan like Dr. A said in the 2002 version, you'll be alot happier and healthier for it.
    5. Clean induction means you only eat the things on the acceptable food list for the first two weeks. Nothing else. Nada, zip, nothing. The acceptable foods are http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6781 and the rules of induction are http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6782
    6. The Second Time Around Club is just for topics like this. Welcome to STAC, a great bunch of supportive people here who are very energetic and motivational. Check in here with us every day and you'll have great success. Not that you have to check in every day to participate, but I've found it certainly helps create momentum.

Re: Here I go again !!!

Steve, Joy gave you some great advice. She clearly knows her stuff!

Another thing I'll say, though it seems cryptic, is plan ahead, but take it one day at a time.

      PLAN AHEAD AND BE PREPARED
Make sure you have LOTS of legal foods readily available for yourself if hunger strikes. You'll be less tempted to grab something illegal.

Always carry water with you--sometimes your "hunger" may actually be thirst.

Schedule workouts--if they're blocked into your schedule, you'll be less likely to forget or find excuses not to go!

If you're going to a restaurant or to someone's house, find out what the menu is ahead of time. Compare it to your acceptable foods list. Check the carb counts. Look for hidden sugars, fillers, thickeners, and starches.

      ONE DAY AT A TIME
Sometimes the road seems long (or endless) but focus on how you feel TODAY. Think about the energy you have. Think about how your pants are looser today than they were last week. Think about how your cholesterol is lower today than it was a month ago.

If you make a mistake, don't dwell on it or use it as an excuse to totally fall into a carb-laden inferno. Get back on track the very NEXT BITE!

Best of success to you steve, keep posting, and let us know how you're doing!

Hey Steve, I remember you! Go read the FAQ section of the board. There's alot of information there that will help to answer other questions you may have. Starting about 1/2 way down the page are all kinds of tidbits for eating this way properly.

Re: Here I go again !!!

That was great ! Thanks for the advice.
            I'm off and running.

Joy, Those links were exactly what I needed. I cut & pasted the information into a Word doc and printed it out to keep with me.

Julirama, I had to laugh when you mentioned the pants. I got motivated again a couple days ago when I had to put on my dressier clothes for a wake. I rarely wear them. I felt like screaming when I tried to button them. I HATE THE TIGHT PANTS FEELING !! Plus I am planning ahead. I tutor a teenage girl in Math on Monday afternoons. Her mom always makes me dinner. This Monday she'll be making plain tuna and a salad for me. Your July to Dec progress from the pictures is incredible. Congrats !

Outback, Thanks for the support and I will certainly take their advice.

Sillygirl, I'm flattered you remember me ! I'll spend some time later today looking at the FAQ section. There's so much great information here it's going to take awhile to get it all organized.

I'm looking forward to participating in the chats too.

            Have a great day.

            Steve
