Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

I have thought about the procedure - many times. You see people on tv and in magazines that have had it and lost so much weight and for a second I think hey, maybe that is something I should do - solve all my problems.

But then I come back to reality and know that the procedure is very dangerous. Plus the people who have the surgery still have to learn how to eat in a different way too.

You hear a lot of good things about the surgery but then if you look you will also see all the bad that comes along with it.

Atkins has been around many many years. This new procedure hasn't. We really don't know the true "long-term" effects.

So I have decided that I got myself fat so I need to be the one who fixes it. I got myself this way so I should be able to get myself back to normal - without being an experiement!

That's just my opinion - I know many people have choosen it and I wish them all luck and good health.

But it's just not for me....

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

For myself, I would never get the surgery.

I like to be able to control what goes into my mouth. Atkins is teaching me about portion control, healthy vs. non-healthy foods, and how to satisfy my hunger and not boredom/thirst/emotions.

It seems that your enjoyment of eating is drastically reduced or cut out completely with surgery. I like food! I like that I am able to savor it, and I'm glad I've decided to eat healthy foods now after giving up the bad stuff. I fear that if I would have gotten surgery I never would have learned that, and still eaten the same junk, just in miniscule portions.

And not to mention the COST. Atkins is costing me LESS than my previous eating habits--I no longer buy "fast food," I no longer drink soda, I hardly ever go out to the bar, and I don't buy all those expensive processed and packaged foods any longer. For me, Atkins is the best choice.

My best-man's wife had it. She looks great but is miserable. She can't eat more than a bite and if she does she throws up. If she eats the wrong thing, her whole day is shot, no energy and needs a nap. She has left more parties/gatherings at my house for those very reasons I can't count. She recently had a tummy tuck after losing all her weight, and almost died from an infection.

While some people have great success (and she did) the possible side effects are terrible if you are unlucky enough to get them. Not my choice of how to spend the rest of your life, I'll stick to this thanks.

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

Surgery? No thanks! My best friend had it.. lost weight.. but she didn't come out looking super model swelt like most people think they will. She still has saddle bags, has to exercise, too much sugar makes her visit the bathroom often, she still struggles with cravings, she still have the emotional baggage from being overweight (you know, that brain image of ourselves), still eats out of boredom. She has even said to me she feels like she cheated her way to a lower weight. While she is off medications for blood pressure and such, she still struggles in life just like the rest of us. Some people think .."If I could just lose weight, my life would be so much better..." HA!

I won't even go into the surgical risks, long-term effects, etc. I worry about nutrition in these people and osteoporosis and such from lack of foods in their systems.

            Surgery is not for me!

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

Definitely not an option for me. The risks are just to high. I want to be here to love my son and guide him through life. He is 3 years old and I would never jeopardize the time I have with him and DH. I know that some people feel desperate and want to go that route, but if you we learn the abilities to eat healthy after the weight loss surgery - then why not start before considering surgery?

Just too scary in my book.

not an option for me.... but I have a sis who would qualify... but what concerns me is the long term health risks related to the lack of nutrition....

and my OTHER sis knows a gal who had it and lost a bunch of weight.. had the skin removed.. all that.. but now she's eating the bad stuff again... chocolate.. etc... for the energy (can't eat large so she eats calorie packed)... and she's gaining weight again!

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

I checked into it, even went to the first appt with the Dr, and he said I was eligible f course: He stood to make a fortune off of it. So I decided to do it, and walked to the front desk to make the next appt. "Therapy" And 600.00 up front..I stood back in shock and thought, wait a minute, IM FAT, NOT CRAZY! I walked out of the office and gave up the idea.
A couple weeks later I asked my Family dr what he thought of it and he said whats the point in doing it..its only going to make you do what you should be doing anyway, eating less...Got to love them old school country doctors..lol

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

I've never seriously considered it. I am fat, but I'm not to the point where it would be necessary. The people who are basically so heavy that they can no longer move are about the only people I'd say that should even consider this type of extreme choice. I have a buddy who had it done and he was VERY heavy and was really going to die if he did not lose weight rather quickly. I've seen the problems he has just trying to eat properly. To me it's not worth all the trouble.

From everything I've heard or read about weight loss surgery... no way! Too many horror stories and too few happy endings. I'll stick with Atkins... for life!

Re: Anyone who struggles think about weight loss surgery?

I personally know four people who had the stomach reducing surgery. Two lost the weight initially, then gradually gained everything back and are just as overweight today as they were before the surgery.
One person died from complications from it, and the fourth is actually doing very well.
