  • If you reached your goal and gained it back...

    Hi,

here's a question for former 'goalies'... I've never made it so far myself, but I'm planning this time for sure, so I wanna know all!

If you made it to goal. And then gained again... Have you figured out, why? What happened? Did you give it up? What went wrong? Why went wrong?
I wanna know to avoid it happening to me .

So, please, can you tell us and warn us against it!

    Many thanks!

I was in within 2 pounds... So, I think that is close enough for me to answer...for me, it was simply that I got overconfident and sloppy and I got away with it for MONTHS before I started gaining weight. When it did start catching up with me, I was in denial...that just made it worse and eventually, it was all back plus 12 and I couldn't deny it any longer...I had tried to restart MANY times never making it more than a few days...this time my head was right, I guess, because I just knew I had to do it and do it right. So, I guess it was that "slippery slope" and self-sabotage...not going to happen again, though...I learned my lesson! Best wishes to you!!

Re: If you reached your goal and gained it back...

I was in denial about actually needing to make Atkins a way of eating for life, rather than a short-term diet. I was never overweight other than maybe five or ten pounds, which I could easily get off with a low-fat diet or more exercise, until I had children. After the second one, I was 40 pounds overweight, and I still looked pregnant. I mistakenly assumed that if I just dropped those 40 pounds, I could maintain. I did drop the 40 pounds by styaing on OWL at the berries level. Then I stopped Atkins altogether. The problem is, I really DO have a metabolic problem with sugar. I kept the sugar to a bare minimum until this fall, when I really over-did it. I knew I had lost control of my eating, and decided I needed to break the carb addiction.

I think my other biggest mistake was rushing through the weight loss by staying at a low carb level, never finding my CCLL, not going through pre-maintenance, or maintenance. Dr. Atkins says in DANDR that you are virtually guaranteed to put weight back on if you fail to do Pre-Maintenance.

Another mistake I made was not to try a big variety of foods. And this probably tied into my thinking that "this is only short-term". That only led to an eagerness when finished with the diet to try many of the things I had been depriving myself of. For example, spaghetti. This time I am going to experiment with more low-carb options. For example, can I eat it over green beans or spaghetti squash instead of noodles? Or can I eat a small portion of whole-wheat noodles at the proper stage of OWL and still tolerate it? Or is pasta just something I have to learn to live without? Are there low-carb alternatives to some of my favorite high-carb foods?

Fortunately I came to my senses with only 17 pounds to lose instead of 40+ this time. With less weight to lose, and already knowing that Atkins works, I am trying to keep my focus more on how to eat successfully long-term, rather than trying to quickly get back to a certain weight.

Best of luck with your journey! I hope you learn from our mistakes rather than repeat them yourself!

Re: If you reached your goal and gained it back...

        Hello,

This is a very interesting topic for me at the moment.

I have reached my goal of 133lbs, from 146lbs at 5.5 inches. I did not have that much to lose.

I am gradually increasing my carbs in terms of eating more vegetables, and I must say that I am petrified really as I do not want to gain any of it back. I have not weighed myself since reaching goal last week.

I have not really studied the "rung" yet.

I too need to find that CCL. That will really help.

I just need some kind soul to hold my hand

What a great thread! I too, got overconfident. Like Kylie, I could 'relax' alittle and it didn't affect my weight. But I'm a carbie and that was my downfall. I had to come back and stop cold turkey... it took about a month and the realization that I was pretty much back to where I started (food wise) before I could decide to start back on induction. Wow. I feel great but it took a few days; my body really likes the carbs!!
Now it's no big deal... but I'm not losing as fast this time.
          Good luck!
Ahhh to be called a 'LOSER'!!

Re: If you reached your goal and gained it back...

Thanks for this post. I really don't think there is or ever will be a definitive answer to that question. There are thousands of real personal experiences posted on this board addressing this issue. Somedays I find this board incredibly enlightening and think I have found an answer here that I can relate to. This can enthuse and keep me on track for the better. Somedays I feel that I am spending too much time focusing on weight loss and there is no "holy grail" and other parts of my day to day life are passing me by. This is just my thoughts, any responses are welcome.

Thanks for all the great responses!
Some things I have thought of myself - like not going through all rungs would be a mistake. Or pre-maintenance.
Some things like becoming overconfident just never came to my mind. But probably this can happen to me as well and very easily.
I think this kind of eating just has to become a "second skin", so you instinctively make right choices. Like kids do. My kid can live on raw veggies for weeks and then ask for meat and meat only for days... But he's very young, while I'm the creature of habits. I 'know' I 'want' those cookies etc. And it's so much easier to overeat on carbs.
Well, I'm strong in theory as you see
Please, post further! Can't wait to reach my goal and stay there

Also, those who have reached goal and maintained - what's your biggest secret? What did you do what you see others are missing?
