  • Kind of bummed here

Well something I ate over the last few days knocked me straight out of ketosis! What the heck was it? The only thing I can figure is that BF made some red onions with garlic and butter sauce for over a steak. I've been eating red onions chopped in chicken salad for weeks, but I guess eating a whole glob of them did the trick because they did taste quite sweet, as if carmelized or dang near carmelization. Has anyone ever had this happen to them with red onions before? Just curious...

Don't bum too much, Pigs...one purpose of OWL is to find out trigger foods for you so you know what you can and can't eat. I know it is kind of disheartening to get knocked out of ketosis, but try to keep the big picture in mind.

I don't eat red onions much. I've never had trouble with yellow or Vidalia onions, but everyone's trigger foods are different. I remember reading one post about someone who had trouble with cucumbers.

What are your signs that you're not in ketosis? Did you experience cravings or hunger after eating that meal? Ketosticks are negative?

One possibility is that it is not the onions itself, but the quantity. According to the Atkins web site carb counter, 1/2 cup raw onion has about 5 g carbs, but 1/2 cup cooked onions has around 10. Maybe you just went over your carb allotment for the day. How much would you guess you ate?

Another possibility is that it is not the onions but something else you haven't thought of. Like did you change brands of anything you buy - salad dressing, cottage cheese, bacon, etc. I've seen posts and personally experienced problems with particular brands of cottage cheese, for example. So rather than thinking, Oh cottage cheese is safe for me, I have to be aware that I can eat only a particular brand of cottage cheese.

That said, the best way to really test in my opinion is to get back into ketosis, eating foods that you know are okay, and then introduce the red onions again and see if they knock you back out.

Best of luck to you, You're doing great! I always enjoy reading your posts!

Thanks for the support, Attek! I didn't have that much, maybe 1.4 of a cup....the reason I can tell I'm out of ketosis is because my strip was showing trace amounts when I tested yesterday. I'll make onions again and try them out, see if that's what happened. It may just be that I ate more carbs than I should have all the way around and I need to control portions more.
      Thanks again!
