  • Pondering on diets..

I was lying in bed this morning thinking about why I stopped Atkins about a year ago and about eating and diets in general. I basically stopped because I was going to the gym regularly and trying to get back into running. The runner's links and sites ALL seem to be dead set against the Atkins WOE and are VERY inisistant that it cannot work for athletes of any flavor. I got tired of hearing about how "weird" I was and how bad Atkins was for me. Now at this point I was down about 60 pounds and was never feeling better.

I finally got tired of hearing about it and started eating a runners diet and basically a crummy American diet. Of course it came at the same time as a job related back injury and and an office job. Of course we all know how this worked out!

Anyway, I was thinking about the differences and "weirdness" of the low fat VS lo carb diets and thought about what each diet excludes and limits for the body. On Atkins you eat things that are pretty natural and in its basic rough states. In the low fat thing, they have created many packaged, commercial things which contents sound more like a drug than a food. The low fat boys can eat cookies, cakes, fruit drinks, and all other sorts of things and claim "victory". They have to exclude full flavored natural things that may have something (fat) that they already have in their bodies? Hmmm... Who's actually limiting things out of their diets and bodies that are "better"?

I quit under some pretty high peer pressure. I think at 44 and now 45 that was pretty darned stupid!

    Re: Pondering on diets..

I understand what you are saying. I think it is an individual choice for each of us. As a fat person my whole life, I've tried the low-fat and other diets over and over again. I also know many people who have lost weight on low-fat...but it didn't work for me.

It wasn't until I actually found this site, educated myself on how my body works and committed to changing my ways for life instead of going on a temperary diet. I don't condem anyone for any of the choices they make, but thank goodness I've learned what works for me.

I did the same thing. Got down to the 170s, was ENJOYING my running and the speed I was gaining.... Let a misplaced comment from a doctor and a raft of peer pressure change my mind about what I was doing... Now, here I am trying to lose a bunch of weight and get back to where I was before. Our stories should be a warning to anyone on how those "thoughts" as you close in on your goal weight can completely blow up all the progress you've worked so hard for.

Thats at least the one thing that is in my favor. I have a Doctor that wants to kick my butt for getting off this WOE. She is FULLY supportive of Atkins. I am worried about not losing like I did on the first "go around", but come heck or high water, this starts tomorrow AM...

I always think about it this way. We evolved/were created ( another discussion..not here..lol) with certain foods available to our systems, and for thousands of years we were a typical lean killing machine that moved incrementally towards civilization.

The same foods are available now. So are a bunch of "other" things that we've invented to eat, just as we've moved forward technologically. I'll use the PC computer, the DVD, microwave etc., but that's because our brains have evolved to handle it..our bodies? Not as well.
