  • Something kinda odd the doctor said to me....

last week when I went to see him he did some bloodwork and stuff. He asked about my diet. I told him I was doing Atkins. He said well that's good but you do know you can lose a whole lot of weight with that plan but you must transition into either Weight Watchers or South Beach or you will gain it all back. You can't live on Atkins forever....

I know many doctors and many people in general do not agree with Atkins.

But I really don't think they understand the entire plan. They only know bits and pieces of it.

I have struggled with my weight for years and years now. I lost over 67 lbs on Atkins before. It's the only plan that has ever worked for me and a plan that I actually liked doing.

I thought to myself while the doctor was carrying on about these other plans are ones that you can live the rest of your life on. Well so is Atkins.

I do know that if I continue to abuse carbs like I was doing before I will not live very long. Atkins is something I can live with. It didn't let me down before (when I fell off the wagon) I let it down. It wasn't Atkins' fault that I gained weight back - that was my own doing.

So basically I know what works for me and when I hear either doctor's or other people put Atkins down I am going to just ignore them. What's important is what works for me and what I can live with and what makes me happy.

    Just my opinion!!!

Wow--what an undeducated doctor. So....what he/she is saying is that it's much easier to buy prepackaged, special made food that you order than it is to go to the store and shop the produce and meat department? Can't stay on it for life? Are all the grocery stores going to shut down and stop selling food? Askewed logic to say the least.

Everyday doctors don't impress me much with their opinions. Dr. Atkin's spent decades of research on this one particular WOE all the way around, and treated 25,000 patients in regards to this study with beyond extensive research and found a breakthrough. What other people consider Dr. A's opinons are indeed, facts he gathered through data he researched. And facts, I trust.
And even though we are all second time arounders, we all know exactly how well this diet works. Good for you for not engaging in the doctors ignorance!

Re: Something kinda odd the doctor said to me....

I thought about that - showing him. But heck he is the one who went to medical school. Why should I teach him anything?

He doesn't have a clue what works for me. Without Atkins I would probably be over-weight for the rest of my life.

I know that I have a long way to go but with Atkins I have hope. I have a chance.

I think many people like him really don't understand what "being overweight" means. They have never experienced it. So they don't have a clue.

Sure they think low carb means no carb. You couldn't possibility live like that the rest of your life. Well get a clue Doctor, buy the book before you carry on about something you know NOTHING about.

There is no way I could ever do weight watchers. I wasted many years and many dollars trying to do that program. I know that it works for others but not for me.

I have tried so many diets throughout the years that I had almost given up on the idea of losing weight. I had kinda thought I would be like this forever. Until I found an old copy of Dr. Atkins book. I sat down and read through it. I thought well this sounds like something I could do.

And I did it. I lost 67 lbs in about 4 months. I felt good, I looked good, my cholesterol went down and I was on top of the world.

But unfortunately many personal problems caused me to backslide. But now that I can see from both sides of the fence I know that if I continue to eat the way I was eating that I will not live to see old-age. And if I did live to see old-age then I would probably not be able to get around and taking so many medicatations that life wouldn't be worth much.

So now I must take control - with whatever program works for me. And that just happens to be Dr. Atkins plan.

It's just so funny how people automatically think low-carb is bad. Heck carbs are what have made me so fat!!!! The bad ones that is....

i work with MDs, PhDs, Registered Pharmacists, Biochemists, Pharmacokineticists, Veterinarains, and a zillion others with science backgrounds. very few of them "get" Atkins or the prinicples and the science behind it.

i am lucky enough to have an ob/gyn that lost 65lbs. on Atkins, so he "gets it" and encourages patients with my body type and condition to do Atkins or some form of lo-carb. but, unfortunately, i think that it's still widely disregarded in the medical community, despite the mounting evidence that suggests lo-fatting is proportional to the obesity epidemic we are experiencing.

A lot of doctors... are stupid. My mom had me seeing a nutritionist... and that woman was pretty ignorant. She said that Atkins was a crash diet and that I should try something a little less extreme. I pointed out that only induction is extreme. The rest is normal. She looked like she didn't know what I was talking about.

They don't read up on anything. For the most part, doctors just say: "High fat, low carb... not a good plan. 20 carbs? How can you think that's healthy." And a lot of them are surprised when you tell them there are actually 4 phases with several subphases.

Mind you, not all doctors are like that. My regular physician is brilliantly understanding, and she supports this way of eating. :::shrug::: If your doctor is one of //those// doctors... Switch doctors! XD

Re: Something kinda odd the doctor said to me....

My doc is really not that great in general so I am not wasting my time trying to educate him nor even tell him I am doing Atkins. When I had high cholesterol, there advice to me was, "Stop eating fried chicken" (without actually asking me if I ATE fried foods). So I think I'm better off taking Dr. A's advice and keeping it to myself.

Hey I seen Oprah and just about fell off my chair when that woman said she was 70. She was jogging daily and looked better than I have in a very long time. It was a good show.

Now as for the doctor thing...my doctor pretends he is supportive of Atkins but I don't really think he believes I will lose any more than 20 pounds and that I'll gain it back. One visit...he told me that I was "overweight" because I wanted to be. I cried all the way home. Now I realize just how ignorant he really is. I haven't yet told him I am back on Atkins and hope to prove him wrong.

I know there are many good doctors out there but it's just so hard to find one that understands what we go through. Sometimes it just seems so unfair and cruel.

I wouldn't worry too much about what your doctor thinks. Just keep up with Atkins and prove to him that it works!!!!

Because we all know it's true.

Most people are just so uneducated about Atkin's. They think that we sit around all day eating hamburgers and drinking lard. I could imagine many doctor's are just as uneducated. However, if this is the doctor you choose to stay with you really should try to help him realize this is a healthy way for you to lose weight. This is the person you are trusting with your physical health. He needs to be your friend and not someone you think is stupid or someone you feel you have to "prove wrong". If he continues to scoff at your decision then I think you should find someone who doesn't! Not to be sexist but I think women doctor's are so much more understanding & they seem to really listen better than their male counterparts.
