  • How many diets have you tried before Atkins??

Well I am back.....to Atkins, so I am reading alot in the 2nd timers section for support. I went on Atkins a couple years ago, with success, and then the lure of other diets that you can eat cake and pizza got the better of me! I went off Atkins and ballooned up to my starting weight and this definitely got me depressed over my failure, so I tried L.A. Weight Loss. Lets just say after 5 months, and only a 10 lb weight loss, I quit the program to come back to the tried and true weight loss program that worked for me 2 years ago. At LA, I had to eat these sugar bars everyday, that spiralled me into HUGE sugar cravings, and I always felt tired. When I wanted to drop the bars on several occasions, well lets just say, I wondered if they cared more about my progress, or making diet bar sales.....I did not feel very supported. I started this thread in case there is anyone else like I was, right now, who may think one of these very expensive, full of promises diets will work for them, and be easier than Atkins with the same results.....I have to say, don't fall for it! Atkins may not be easy at times, but anything that is worth it isn't easy! Take it from me, I just wish I didn't wait so long to come back!!!!

Re: How many diets have you tried before Atkins??

I never really tried any other diets before. Although I've always been chubby, I guess in my 20's (I'm about to turn 32), I just really wasn't that unhappy with the way I looked and felt. Now I am about the same size as my 20's, give and take some fluctuations, but I, like many girls my age, am starting to feel the ole 30's metablolism slow down and decided to give being slender a go. Once I got that in my head, all the sudden I just wasn't happy with the rolls on my frame and realized that I really had some serious blinders on in my 20's!

I do remember when I was 21 and gave birth, I tried to go on a little diet and thought that eating a breakfast of oatmeal and toast with no butter, OJ, a lunch of a deli sandwich with mustard and no mayo or cheese with pasta and lemon juice, and a dinner of a salad and baked potato was a good diet! I didn't lose a pound!

I do know that the weight loss industry is just that: an industry. They are trying to make money selling an idea of a version of something. Atkin's was a doctor who did research and found a medical breakthrough and shared his information and knowledge.

Oh! And congratulations on getting hitched this summer! It is not a coincidence that I came back around to Atkins the year I may be getting married! No proposal yet, but.....I'm comfortable placing a bet at this point that it will happen! When it does happen, I'll be here blowing up the board with the post!

Back in 1984 I tried the Weight Watchers program. I worked pretty well, but I stopped due to the fact that I started driving a truck and working 18 hours a day most days made making the meetings and such an impossibility. I was also unloading and loading tires all day which had its own way of making me lose weight and exercise... Try unloading and then re-loading about 6000 tires a day...ugh!

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Re: How many diets have you tried before Atkins??

I didn't try too many diets. I usually just went out and bought all the typical diet fare (rice cakes, ff cottage cheese, ff goodies) and convinced myself that this time I could actually "just cut back". Yeah, cuz it's worked so well for me in the past.

I'm the woman who snatches magazines off the rack at checkout simply because they have "You can lose 10 pounds in 10 days!" and such blazed across the cover. I have yet to actually do one of their diets with any real gusto.

Oh, I gave the cabbage soup diet a go, but didn't make it the full week. That was torture. I tried Slim Fast a couple of times, but who was I kidding? I like to eat....drinking gussied up milk just didn't cut it. I'm like that comedian (can't remember his name) who said "Slim Fast? Oooooh, great with nachos!'

Atkins is the one and only WOE I can stick with. Each time I have fallen off the wagon, it's because of my own stupidity and not due to any fault of the plan. It helps that I've had my DH hide my scale. I'm determined not to treat Atkins as a diet. It is going to be me WOL and any loss will be considered an added benefit.

Re: How many diets have you tried before Atkins??

                  Good question:

                  Cabbage soup diet (yum!)
Hibernation diet (mad, loads of honey before bed)
                  GI diet
                  Weight watchers (was starving)
                  1200 calories per day (i.e. 2 boost bars d'uh)
Body for life (ok but 6 small meals a day is a pain in the butt)
                  Slim fast (lasted 2 seconds)
Raw food diet (quite nice, still use the recipes)

Man, what a waste of time and money...
