  • Portion Control and Wine

    Hey Everyone!

This is my 2nd time around as well and I'm scared to start! The first time around, I had lose 5 pounds in a month. I was discouraged because I was expecting to lose at least that much in two weeks. Well, after that first month on induction, I had some major problems with my portion control! I would eat and eat throughout the day without even thinking about how much I was putting into my mouth. I would eat a one-pound T-bone steak for dinner easily. And I was still craving meat an hour after dinner. In addition to that, I drank my hard liquor and wine. I admit, I'm in my 20's and still have the disposition of partying whenever I feel like it. I went from drinking almost each night to having one glass of wine on Saturdays.

Okay, here is what I'm scared of..Once I start Atkins again, I'm afraid I will eat too much meat. (Staying off carbs and sugar was never a problem.) I did like to indulge in cream cheese with splenda every night as well. (That was a problem too.) Then I have almost completely stopped my drinking, but what if I slip and have my one glass of wine? I've gained 8 pounds since falling off the wagon three months ago. I don't want to mess up my body even more by not being able to stick to this diet. Should I give it a go or wait until I am able to control my portions and stop drinking all together?

If you wait, you'll never do it (at least that's what I've found)

This board is a wonderful support system for maintaining the diet. If you're really concerned about the alcohol intake, perhaps a visit to your local AA? I was a glass of wine - once a week kind of person .... advanced to glass of wine every night (because- you know- studies have found that it's healthy for me.) Then, it became two... three glasses of wine a night.... and I was back in the same boat.

I have recently found that I just can't tolerate any wine, whatsoever (or liquor either). I'm just going to have to (in my head) deal with it like an allergy - 'even a small amount'.

The portion control should correct itself, once you get into ketosis. Make sure that you're eating your veggies (help with constipation, gives you nutrients, etc), then eat until you're satisfied (not stuffed). If you're still hungry 30 min later, eat a bit more. Once you're in ketosis, you'll find that you're less hungry. I've had to actually set up a schedule where I eat every 6 hours, because I'll forget.

We're all here to help you!! Some of us are in the same boat!

Regarding the lack of appetite suppression, make sure you're not eating hidden carbs, or too many carbs. During induction, our bodies go into ketosis/lipolysis, which is a fat-burning process. A natural occurence with this is appetite supression.

Another thing that might be happening is a combination of NOT ENOUGH FAT and TOO MUCH PROTEIN. An excess of protein is converted to glucose in our bodies and ultimately to fat. Also, fat is the food that keeps us feeling satisfied. Adding fat to meals greatly reduces the amount you have to eat to feel satisfied. Check out www.fitday.com and enter in some old menus or some planned ones. Your percentages should be 65% fat, 5% carbs, 30% protein.
