  • Started exercising, now i'm STARVING. Help!

    Hi everyone!

Some of you might remember me, so hi! Those who don't, nice to meet you!

Anyway, I haven't been so good with the exercise the last few months because I was REALLY stressed out. I mean really really really stressed out. Well, this sunday I said enough was enough and I started exercising. Since I never do anything halfway, I probably went overboard (although I'm not all that sore, so maybe not). I did:

    Sunday: 20 mile bike ride
Monday: 3 mile hike (the park elevation ranges from 200 to 1100 feet, so VERY hilly)
    Tues: 3 mile hike
    Wed: 4 mile
    Thurs: 5 mile
    Fri: 7 mile
    Sat: 6 mile

So, that should give you some idea as to how overboard i went. :P

Anyway, i'm now STARVING. And starving for carbs, too. I have managed not to go off the diet, but I don't know how to deal with this, it's SO hard. I think I've eaten enough peanuts to feed a small country this week - clearly that isn't a great thing to do. But it was either that or jump into a vat of french fries or bread or something. No matter how much I eat, i'm not satisfied. It's totally a carb craving.

I know that this increase in exercise is to blame for this ravenous hunger that I have, so I was wondering how you guys dealt with the hunger when you get it. I eat a full meal and i'm still starving, put it that way. I've eaten a lot of fat, etc... I eat peanuts and almonds as snacks. And yet I'm still ravenous. Short of eating 2 entire plates of food at every meal, I don't know what to do! help!

(or, at the very least, tell me this will go away! :P)

      Knickknack,

      Whatever you do,

      DON'T GIVE UP.

Yea, I'm sure it sucks to be you right at the minute but you can do this. Look at all the other things you've accomplished in your life that were so much more difficult than staring down a nasty piece of chemical laden factory produced flavorless white bread.

This is no fun right now, but when it passes it'll be one more accomplishment that you can look back on with pride instead of a moment of weakness that you'd rather not remember.

My best advice is to get busy with something cerebrally challenging. Make yourself think so hard that your forehead starts to sweat blood. Do whatever you have to do to distract yourself, but DON'T GIVE IN.

Eat lots of smaller meals and snacks every few hours, and make sure you're eating lots of fat! If you are hungry, then by all means, eat! I would stay away from nuts thought, because those are notoriously hard to control and portion out.

Stick with eggs, cheese, veggies and dip, or if you're on a higher rung, an apple with peanut butter, berries and heavy cream, etc.

Make sure that you eat enough BEFORE you exercise, so your body has fuel to run on. When you're done, eat something filling, and allow yourself to eat if you're hungry. Just choose foods wisely and avoid non-legal foods. Remember, just because you've worked out doesn't mean you've "earned" a cookie or bag of potato chips.

Julie's right. The fat is the hardest thing to cover. You'll find - tho - if you get it in, it'll help you from feeling hungry, and keep you feeling full longer.

I keep a container of hard boiled eggs in the fridge. (I buy an extra dozen... boil 'em when I get home... label the container... so I have quick easy snacks.) A hard boiled egg dipped in ranch dressing is heaven!

Try one of the cream cheese recipes that you can find on the board. Dr. A recommends cream cheese to combat the carb cravings. The mock danish is great, the chocolate cheese cake is to die for... you'll find wonderful selections in the recipe section.

Also, increase the fat in your veggies (make sure that you're eating them!!) Mmmmm ... butter!! garlic!!

Yay for you in increasing your exercise!!!

          I'm so proud of you!!!

Re: Started exercising, now i'm STARVING. Help!

When I'm hungry and I think I shouldn't be, I chug 16 oz of water and wait 15 minutes. If I'm still hungry then I find a high fat snack. If you're hungry then you should eat.
