  • Thinking of Trying Again

I've been a member of this wonderful site since April 18th, 2005 and it's been awhile since I visited. I was doing so well on my own and didn't think I needed support or encouragement. Well as you can see I'm back. I started Atkins at 205 pounds and am now at 164. That was accomplished in a year. Since then I've been in one big long stall which I was not ready to do anything about. Now I am. I've been reading some of the posts and noticed the addiction to coffee (caffeine). Well I fell into the same boat. I was never a big coffee drinker before Atkins and now I'm up to about three pots a day which I drink myself. All that cream, just thinking of it I cringe. Well I am now also on a high cholesteral medication which I wasn't on before. I have been going regularly to the doctor and we both agree that the coffee and all the cream have to be reduced. I think I'm ready to go back on induction and see where that leads. One thing this past year that I got used to was the low carb bars which I love since mornings are such a rush, I have one for breakfast. The other thing I noticed is that some of the yogurt brands have come out with no sugar yogurt, they're sweetened with splenda. I can eat a 750g serving in one sitting as an evening snack. Don't know if that's a good idea or not, the carbs aren't high and it is sweetened with splenda.

A typical day for me goes like this

share a pot of coffee with the husband - just add cream (lots)
go to work and put on a half a pot - with lots of cream
breakfast - scrambled eggs in the microwave with cream and 2 slices of bacon
put on another half pot of coffee - with lots of cream
lunch is usually sliced meat of some type with a tomato or cucumber and a slice of cheese
go home and put on a full pot of coffee with lots of cream
supper is some type of meat with a salad
after dinner snack is peanuts, or the yogurt which I mentioned above or an atkins bar.
I do drink my eights glasses of water if not more.

I was lucky and in February won a years membership to a Goodlife Fitness Gym which I just love. I go every second day (my doctor doesn't recommend every day for me) and I stay an hour excercising, 30 min of cardio and 30 minutes with the weight machines, and then I use the suntan bed which is very relaxing.

My plan is to start the induction again and cut out all the coffee and cream which I feel is where most of my carbs are coming from.

I don't know if I'm in the right frame of mind right now to start the Induction again, but I know that the more I think about it the closer I get there. I am so afraid of putting back on the weight that I've lost. It was hard work and to start again, well. Anyway, any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Coffee addiction was something I had to kick as well. (Also caffeine in general, I was even eating the mints with that stuff in 'em). Maybe you should spend a week focusing on drinking what IS allowed. Gradually make the shift over a week. I went cold turkey and had killer headaches for about 2-3 days, not reccomend it. Once you get your coffee/cream addiction out of the way, prepare yourself for a nice, clean induction, and THEN tackle induction. Trying to do too many lifestyle changes at once is pretty difficult. Take things in increments, and hopefully it'll be a smoother road for you.

Like CAbubba suggested, you'll want to cut down on your coffee incrementally. Go to black coffee and drink more water.

A question about your breakfast bar. Is there sugar alcohol in it? I used to eat different low-carb bars years ago but my weight loss stalled. Eventually, someone clued me in that the sugar alcohol was the culprit.

The carb bar is made by Atkins so I'm assuming the sugar alcohol level is fine

When I even approach those Atkin's bars I stall for a week. Actually, I generally avoid "Atkin's" products because of their effects on me. Just from random reading around here, I know lots of people avoid them as well. Maybe someone with more experience with the bars can speak out.

            Re: Thinking of Trying Again

I started out with the bars my first week. Following the suggestion of the people here I ditched them. Haven't looked back. Other times I've tried Atkins I'd wake up in the middle of the night and devour these bars. I did that the first week. Once I stopped eating the bars, the cravings stopped and I actually sleep the night through mostly. Better than before, that's for sure.

Good luck with the caffiene. I am breaking my routine with it as well. No more artificial sweetner, no half and half, black coffee that's it. One a day. If I drink it all in the morning, tough, if I drink it throughout the day ... better.

That's one large cup from mcD's on the way to work. As compared to .... several of them a day four weeks or so ago.
