  • Starvation mode question

    Hi all,

    Does anyone know of a calculation to determine what the approximate number of calories for starvation mode is for a given weight? I'd like to know what the floor is for my daily calorie intake so I'm sure I don't run into problems.

    QSECOFR- I think there is something about in the DANDR and it's been posted that Julirama, a poster here, has a link to one. Maybe do a search for a post?

      I think the general rule is not to eat less than your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

      Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate with 7 formulas including Mifflin-St Jeor, Harris-Benedict, and Schofield. Find your resting calorie needs.


      but there are many sites and calculators. Try Google.

      Others say don't go for a calorie deficit of more than 500 Cals a day - your needs are your BMR (what you need doing nothing) plus what you need to maintain a particular activity level.

      But remember the Atkins programme counts carbs, not calories - if you follow the programme correctly, avoiding hunger, the calories will look after themselves. If you are not losing (especially as you approach goal) watching calories becomes more important.
