Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

My two cents worth would be this: Like the NIKE ads says: "Just Do it!" Prior to becoming an excerciser myself, I didn't understand the slogan. Now I do. True athletes know that often times exercise is unpleasant. But...what they also know is that if they "Just Do It!" they will feel better. Therein lies the motivation to get off your butt and go exercise when you don't feel like it. I am a firm believer that if one will stick to an exercise program long enough to see results, whether that be mentally or physically, or both....they will NEVER want to stop! Exercising truly does give the body a "high!" JUST DO IT! You know you have it in you!!!!!!!
"Thin is Possible!" formerly known as "Is Thin Possible?" Atkins made a believer outta me!

Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

I am glad I got to see this. It has helped me tremendously too. I used to lift weights a long time ago and I am a firm believer in them. I can't wait to get started back. Also, another thing to do, if you have access, is swimming! It helps you all over and is very low/no impact. Well, we are in this together! I just got my treadmill and I just walked on it. I want to be able to run a mile, nonstop. That is one of my major goals. Also, it is very important for your children to see you doing this. That is one of the reasons I want to do it in front of my daughter. she is going to start running a mile every morning. She likes to enter races and we haven't gone to one in a while because I can't participate...not even in the walking part! But now I am determined I will. Good luck!

I hate exercise too, so I do a 30-minute weight training session once a week. It's called Slow Burn and you can read about it here: http://www.seriousstrength.com/. I bought the book at Half Price Books and it's fascinating!

Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

Thank you everyone for the replies, encouragement and great stories!! I have NO physical reasons for not exercising other than my knees hurting afterward but I am hoping they will get used to the exercise. That is very interesting about the cells and what happens when you don't move your body!

I am planning to run over to Rack Room today and hopefully I can find some good walking shoes there, the ones I have are horrible - all leather and very stiff and clunky. And today, I'll get on the treadmill! I will also be checking out some exercise dvd's at the library!

Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

Find a time to exercise that suits you. For me it's first thing in the morning, before I do anything else... that way I get it out of the way for the day and don't have to worry about it. As you can see, I too am not a great exercise fan...
Having said that, I'll admit that after two years of gritting my teeth and exercising daily (or almost), it's definitely getting easier and more fun! Now there are even days when I miss it!!! Amazing!

Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

I did it I just got done on the treadmill and I feel GREAT! I got myself some really cool new walking shoes and that made a HUGE difference. They are so light on my feet that I don't feel any pain. Thanks for all the motivation, I am excited to see how much better my weight loss will go this time WITH exercise

Re: Overcoming a hatred of exercise....how?

I was determined not to do too much too fast because I knew I would quit if I got too sore or bad feeling. I didn't want to dread it. I have been doing the following exercises for two weeks and I have no exercise tolerance at all. Some of the girls are doing 100 crunches every day or every other day but I chose to do 50 a day. I do 25, rest for a few seconds then do 25 more and I feel a good sense of accomplishment when I am done with these. The push ups, I have to be on my knees a bit because I have so much upper body weight and almost no upper body strength. At the end of April I will up my exercises and make them more challenging. I am adding in my mile on the treadmill today though. Good luck and don't give up!

                      25 Pushups
                      50 Crunches
                      25 Hip Thrust
                      25 Leg extensions (each leg)
25 Side leg lifts (each leg)

I realize not everyone can do this, but the very best exercise motivator I ever got is my dog Jess. Her little face looking at me pathetically when I don't want to take her for her regular walks kills me every time. My husband tried for years to get me to walk with him and I would always find an excuse. Now that we walk once or twice a day together I have discovered that it is the time we communicate the best. It is 45 minutes of undivided attention between us, no kids, no TV, nothing to do but talk to each other (and argue about whose turn it is to pick up the pile!)

For some of us, it was REALLY small! Like barely being able to walk across the room or stand longer than two minutes. And that was a couple months ago. Some things improve fast; just did 11 miles on the bike.

Start small and keep working to increase what you do. And my ever-present suggestion, go for variety so you don't get bored.

I think Lyssie made a really good point about what a difference exercise makes in the shape of your body. When I was on Atkins the first time I got down to around 130 pounds and I was wearing a size 4! Back when I met my boyfriend in 1998 I weighed around 120 pounds and was wearing a size 6. Exercise might not make a huge difference in your weight, but it sure makes a difference in your size! That is my motivation to move!

By the way, if you are looking for something to tone and lengthen your muscles, I would strongly recommend Pilates. It makes a huge difference in your mid section. Also, one of my friends who is a mommy has had some issues with stress incontinence since her two c-section babies were born. She no longer has that issue because of Pilates!
