  • Fuzzy math on Atkins bars?

Ok, I made the mistake of going to Target today when I was hungry and bought some Atkins Caramel Chocolate Peanut Nougat bars I haven't eaten any, and don't plan to for quite some time, but I couldn't resist getting them they looked so yummy. Anyway, I didn't check the back because Miss Priss was having a fit in the cart - I just chucked 'em in and kept going. I get home and check the back and it says Total Carb 17g with Fiber clocking in at 9g. Yet the front of the box says 3 net. HOW? There are 0 sugar alcohols Anyone have any idea how they arrived at that number?

    Hi, Skinny...

There are other ingredients besides sugar alcohol that supposedly have minimal impact on blood sugar, so they are not included in the "net carb count" for the bars.

Get ready to hear many tell you to "step away from the bars." They are part of what many around here refer to as "frankenfoods." Because I work in a small boutique and am sometimes the only employee there for 7 hours at a time and can't bring food into the boutique, I sometimes use their nutrition bars as a meal replacement. But, it is only very occasionally and I truly use it as a meal replacement - not as a snack. I never use the smaller ones (which are the ones you have) and never, never, never the Atkins Endulge bars... those don't have the fiber or the nutrition that the meal replacement bars have and cause cravings for many.

    Best of Luck to you!

Oh yes I know the derision the bars get And I don't eat them as a snack or dessert either, the rare times I do have them it's when I'm out and there is NOTHING acceptable to eat - so max one a month. Thanks for the help on figuring it out! I will be sticking these in the freezer because I'd count them as 9 carbs and that is way too high for me right now

        I read a review ......

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful:

All carbs are not equal, September 20, 2004
Reviewer:David Rupe "dav7612r" (Detroit, MI) - See all my reviews
I'd just like to dispell another reviewers comment on carbs. I'm a type one diabetic and i've been thru enough nutritional classes tought by medical professionals to know that not all carbs are the same. Net carbs and net carbs only affect blood glucose levels. If you want to see it for yourself go out and buy a blood glucose monitor, test your blood before eating an atkins bar, eat an atkins bar and test your blood 15-20 minutes after eating the bar. You should notice very little difference in your BG level. The next day try the same experimant with a snickers bar or something loaded with carbs/sugar. Im sure you'll see that not all carbs are equal. ;-)
I don't know if that hurts or helps. I know, I'm better off without the bars because I abuse the bars, when I have them.

I crave more, I eat more, and sabotage my efforts. Maybe way down the line, there'll be a place for one or two on occasion. But not now. no matter what the manufacturers of those bars tell me.

Thanks War! Yes, they have no place with me right now either....I truly have no idea why I bought them. They looked like a candy bar and I was in a weak moment lol. Right now they are cooling in the freezer where they shall stay for at least a few weeks!

I have had the caramel cookie dough bars in the past and they are very good, but I am like you, I cannot have something that is candy like - or it makes me want more. Dessert is my kryptonite and strictly off limits for me at the moment.

Re: Fuzzy math on Atkins bars?

Glad to see that people are starting to gain an in-built aversion to those infernal bars...however, I believe the sanctimonious moralizing over using them that occurs in the many many threads where they appear is rather useless...best I can advise people is, before making your choice, remember two things...

            1) Dr. Atkins cared about our weight loss because he was both a Doctor AND had weight issues, therefore, he had a vested interest in helping people overcome weight problems. This means, when he was alive, the bars had his guarantee because he could have a little more control over their ingredients.

2)Dr. Atkins is no longer with us. Atkins Nutritionals is now a company run by corporate fatcats that want to make money. They make money when we fail! If everyone succeeded no one would need their products. Of course this is typical of any and all corporate weight loss programs. Which means they do not have a vested interest in our success.

Those are the best two things to keep in mind before buying anything with the Atkins label.
