  • Nights are SO hard.

I am STUFFED from dinner. Yet my mind is telling me I'm hungry and that it wants chocolate. What is wrong with me? How long will this terrible habit take to break? I haven't caved and WILL NOT but it sure is annoying to have to tell myself every five minutes that no, I am not hungry.

I am having the same trouble. It was very much a habit for me and my husband to have an evening snack of ice cream or cold cereal. (I was a cereal freak. Ever seen Seinfeld's kitchen cupboard? That was half of what we used to keep around!) Now, I'm just trying to drink my water and keep busy - like reading ADBB!

I SOOOOOOOOOOO totally understand you guys...I could not eat all day just so I could eat at night...Now that i am eating regularly, I am still finding it hard to stop eating early...have been snacking on legal foods, but I am sure this is why the loss is phenomenally slow ...

I usually get me a glass of water and head to my bed and read.. I have never been a night eater...but I understand the need of wanting something sweet in the evening..

That "I want something sweet after dinner" urge is the WORST. For me, it's the left over habit from the carb addiction. When I'm not on induction, I allow myself to have a couple of sliced strawberries and in a bit of heavy whipping cream. Unless I'm totally craving chocolate for days, that will do it.

I've also been known to go to bed early to try to curb it. Just putting your head down for a while can help.

I've always been a night snacker. I've also been an anytime of day snacker. Pepperoni and cream cheese now, or celery and cream cheese or just cheese for snack. I'm sometimes NOT even hungry, it's just habit. I find this very hard to break.

Salami, nuked in the microwave for a few seconds is good! As is cream cheese and a handfull full of mange tout (snow peas) from your veggie allowance. These are really quite sweet and yummyyy!

                Re: Nights are SO hard.

nights are hard for me too.. i have this mentality of "but i have done so good all day, i deserve a REWARD!" and then i think, exactly, you did so well all day, why screw up now? it seems to be working so far. i also push myself to start doing stomach crunches or leg lifts.. i can do those while watching tv and if i hold out long enough, the desire to eat at night goes away.

plus i think of oprah and her whole don't eat after 7pm and then dr. oz saying the same thing and i know it's not good to eat, whether low carb or not, right before bed.

and one other trick.. our digestive system is working all the time, it deserves a rest (i fast regularly), so i know that not eating, for at least say 12 hours, really gives my stomach the rest it deserves.

i hope some of these work for you.

Try brushing your teeth...sounds strange but it works for me most of the time.

                      Re: Nights are SO hard.

I always have a hard time at night. Whether I am watching some tv once the kids are down or at the computer responding to my emails for some reason I start craving and it isn;t for food its for sweets. I do one of two things... I brush and floss my teeth or I grab a gallon of distilled water and go to town. Sometimes when I think I am hungry, I drink lots of water and the cravings go away. I am doing so awesome though. When cravings come my way, especially at night, I apply my "you don't need it, it only contributes to my obesity and it's not worth it to get kicked out of ketosis for this stupid little piece of candy or chocolate!!!

YAY! I am kicking my sweet tooth once and for all and "I feel good" (I am singing the song in my head as we speak) lol...

That's a great idea Kristy. That might just break my habit of snacking at night if I replaced it with something else like brushing my teeth before eating. Then the snack would taste terrible!

                        Angela, great ideas too.

                          Re: Nights are SO hard.

Hi skinnymom.... the experts say that it takes 21 days to make a new habit. So what I've been doing is thinking about things in 21 day stints. For me, I've made a decision not to have chocolate for 21 days. I'll reassess how I feel after that. Hopefully by the end of the 21 days, my body and mind will have recognised this new 'non chocolate' world, that feels so scary right now! Its TOM for me, and for the past 22 years I've rewarded myself during this time with chocolate, no matter what diet I may have been on. This past 3 days have been really hard. But I keep thinking of the long term goal, and also my mini goal of 21 days without choccie and somehow I'm coping.
