Nitrate Free Bacon, etc.

    Nitrate Free Bacon, etc.

    Hi All, quick question for all of you

    Ever since I did Atkins a few years ago I never could find bacon or meats that were nitrate free. NOt because they don't exist where I live but Nothing mentions nitrates on the package.
    Sooooo, I always just ate plain regular bacon hoping It would be ok and it was, BUT, I really wanna find the Nitrate free kind.

    So my ?? is: What do I look for on the package? Is it called something else or is it Nitrates?

    I just bought some yesterday. It says nitrate/nitrite free on the front - I got some organic-y "nice to the animals" kind but they have the regular brand as well (is it Oscar Meyer? drawing a blank here) it tasted good and I was glad to not be eating cancer causing additives!

      Oooh Well I have a whole foods by my work so I bet I can find the organic Nitrate free kind there.
      I never saw any at my regular supermarket that sais "Nitrate Free" on it, so I will keep hunting! Thanks!

        Sure!! I hope you can find it. Bacon and hot dogs scare me because my husband read how bad they are for you because of the nitrates so I'm trying my best to avoid those now that I eat bacon a lot more.

              Ok my oscar meyey hot dogs gave sodium nitrIte in the ingredients listed last.

                I *think* nitrate and nitrites are equally bad but someone may know more than I do.....

                  Hormel Natural Choice...No Nitrate or Nitrite added - No artificial Ingredients - minimally processed - no msg added - raised without added hormones - gluten free!!!!! Hormel makes bacon, ham, turkey, and roast beef...I found them at wal-mart! Do a google search so you can see what the package looks like. Also at wally world I found Applewood Farms Organic no nitrate hotdogs. I have tried the ham, bacon, and hotdogs so far and they taste just as good as the stuff that is so bad for you.

                      You can also get good nitrite and nitrate free products from a butcher. Finer markets that have meat counters with butchers generally have fresher products that do not require such preservatives to give them a longer shelf life. Plus they are usually extra tasty.
